I remember a hilarious article in the HSRCC newsletter a few years ago about how the BRM was the most efficient machine ever devised for turning petrol into pure noise .

Space Shuttle pilot cockpit view performing the deceleration turns and gliding down from 84,000 feet to touchdown in just four minutes.
The last 5,000 feet take 39 seconds! And they have no power for a go around.
