Another NSW event "cancelled"

Postby jd73 » Thu Sep 19, 2013 6:25 pm

I received an email today advising the Shoalhaven Gran Fondo scheduled for 29th September has been postponed. The reason given was logistical and planning issues. In the last few months I am aware of other events such as the Goulburn to Camden and Wollongong Gran Fondo which have been cAncelled and would appear to be for similar reasons. I can't believe you can launch an event without having the approvals in place.

Surely there is an issue in NSW if Cycling NSW, NSW Police and the RMS can't get together and agree paramaters for major cycling events / races.

Bicycle Victoria did a fantastic job earlier this year for 3 Peaks, ACT seems to be able to organise the Fitz Challenge each year. What's wrong with NSW ?

NSW doesn't like cycling. I know that's simplistic - but yeah. Otherwise, I'd simply just suggest incompetence.

Talking to an event organiser I know in Vic, the Vic police are much more relaxed about their presence and permission. In NSW, you have to have X police in each location and they have to be paid for Y hours, regardless of how few hours they are actually used. Then you have to pay penalty rates, get consultations done, consult councils and so on. Event planning in NSW is VERY expensive. It's a band wagon that everyone wants to jump on.

And, as g-boaf said, people don't like cycling events.

Now, if it were a V8 supercar run, that would be a different story.

There is only about 5 roads the come off Braidwood Rd.

It's used all the time for racing. Not sure why it's been cancelled.

I immediately thought also of the BV "Sydney" to Newcastle event they are trying to kick off in February.

Not everyone loves BV, but they certainly appear to have a good working relationship with the constabulary in their home state.

I am riding as a wheelchair escort in the Sydney marathon this weekend.
The Traffic Management Plan for this event is truly horrendous. It goes a long way to explaining the cost of entering the event!

I think AUBicycles (Christopher) is riding as an escort in that as well. I don't know what kit he'll be wearing, but say "Hi" if you see him.

Yep, I'll be catching up with Chris at the start!
