SUPERB photo!!!
Hugo Koblet the Swiss superstar died young in a car accident. The "pedaleur de charme" (the charming cyclist) was best known as a GC contender in the Grand Tours (won the TDF in 1951 and the Giro in 1950) but was a great track rider. Was twice European madison champion with Armin Von Buren and a brilliant pursuiter, I would have to look it up to see if he won a world pursuit title but I know he was almost always in the final 4. My uncle told me he 'sold' Koblet an easy ride in a world championships once when they were matched up against each other. Koblet did all the 6 day races and was a great 6 day man too. His Swiss buddy Von Buren was a beast sprinter, one of the fastest of all time, so they were a formidable team.

Koblet always carried a comb and a bottle of eau de cologne when he raced, and after a long solo break in the TDF in 1951, "followers were astonished to see him sit up, blow kisses to girls and take out of his pocket a sponge soaked in water. He was barely across the line when he rinsed his face in Perrier, combed his hair, then started his stopwatch ....

He was a superstar glamour boy, a handsome playboy who loved beautiful women and fast cars, and his love of fast cars killed him in the end.

Is that open? I'm down in Warwick in a couple of months, it'd be interesting to swing by and check it out.

Yeah Idry, you can just rock on in anytime. There was a bloke training on it when I was going past. It is on the New England Hwy only about 1klm after you turn onto it. :)

Gee it looks more tired every time I see it.

Love the old western town velodromes. They have heaps of charm. The one at Tamworth is pretty flash though.

They built a new track off the bypass just after you pass Red Rooster heading south.

It almost looks like a unicycle with training wheels. I'd love to show up on one of these, just for the Say What factor.

Yes, it's getting closer and closer to being finished. All it needs is some hot mix and fencing. For those in the dark, it's Wyatt Park, Lidcombe - my velodrome.

Yep and I spent the next two weeks doing Physio to repair torn ligaments and fibres around the tendons in my ankle and knee. :( I had had a fall in the sprint the week before in a qualifying race for the Aus road titles and this one compounded the problems.

With all that work, did they put in a back straight at the "Wyatt"? Just to stop the confusion of that little sharp last turn to the finish.

Hawthorne Park and Nerang Velodromes were the same here in QLD. Just makes things a little more interesting when you're doing sub 13sec for the 200mtrs.

It's much more oval now. The turn into the front straight used to be a 5m turn, it's now a 30m turn. There is a front and back straight, though. Always has been a back straight, as far as I know.
