I won't get into an argument about what people like to eat, you can eat whatever works for you and it's no skin off my nose, but 315kms with a number of 40kmh+ flat segments would suggest that my body doesn't consider those foods "poison" :) .
The real question is whether you will still be riding like that when you are 60.

Gels are carp.
Fruit is carp.
Pies are carp.
Muesli bars are carp.
Cherry ripes are carp but taste nice.
Doris works at the Caltex.
Some people ride differently from others.
Have I paraphrased correctly?

Incidentally if you DO want to use gels but don't like the taste of GU etc. try TORQ gels, they taste amazing!! The bannofee pie (I think) has 100mg of caffeine too!

Snickers - the secret racing formula. Red Bull in the bidon plus Snickers and Mars bars in the jersey pocket.

If they were in my jersey pocket, I'd have to eat them with a straw after three hours, BB ... :D

I have these Capilano Honey Shotz things. Theyre basically 7g of honey in a little gel sized shot. Have a few of them in a row and you're talking about the same amount of sugar as a Gel.

They're pretty cheap too - $18 for 100. So under a dollar for 30g of sugar. Gels can be $2-4.

Best part is they are just honey, so they taste like honey, and I like honey.

Aside from that, I like bananas and muesli bars. The cheap muesli bars are fine, but the more expensive ones are usually a bit fancier and nicer. On rides longer than 2-3 hours, I try to eat one piece of food (muesli bar, banana or 30g of sugar) every 45-60 minutes.

How long will these last?

Do you freeze them?

They freeze quite well. Ive made a few batches of these now. I just cut them into museli bar sized portions, wrap them in baking paper and throw them in the freezer. They defrost pretty quickly in the pocket.

Honey, in a squeeze bottle from the supermarket.

Calories per gram? Better than gels.

Calories per dollar? Much better than gels.

Litter? None.

Taste? I like it.

viewtopic.php?t=11389&highlight=diy+gel" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Add maltodextrin to boiling water & stir.
Few drops of butterscotch schnapps for flavour.

Winningest gel ever & takes <5min to make 1/2 doz

I've used the SPC fruit mash things you can get from supermarkets and they do the job. Gels work for me if taken regularly: some taste awesome some taste vile - they tend to come out in the same format that they went in a couple of days later which is not a great side effect though. A banana or two is also good as is stopping for a well earned cake if necessary.

I wash things down by loading a bidon with isotonic powder and water and a couple of crushed caffeine tablets and a couple of ibuprofen.
