I got two magpies on my street. No matter what you're gonna find a bird swooping if you turn left out of the driveway or turn right out of the driveway.

Other weekend 2 swoops from the magpie near Gipps Road Greystanes, and this morning one swoop from the same magpie.

This morning I actually saw it coming and looked at it as it circled around to line up for attack. Yelled very loudly at it while I was watching and sped up quickly. It's a pest - but fortunately only the one swoop.

So that's a total of 3. :x

My riding partner this morning was complaining about the chook-factory M7 magpie with expressions of terror. On the way back through Greystanes I walked through the problem area with the helmet on the bike - was left alone. (or maggie was fighting other birds).

Haha, I didn't see this before :)

Crashed my bike last year in the same park while trying to swat them!

Got tag teamed by 3 individuals in this park this morning; even after I dismounted and removed the helmet - 5 swoops, 1 hit. I got hit 2 times, 1 swoop by them yesterday while riding at pace with helmet. Now going around!

Total 11.

PS- My helmet is black and white.. not sure if it makes a difference?

Just discovered this thread. As I live in rural Victoria I would average around 12 swoops and half a hit per ride!

A late start from me... One has just started swooping along Athllon Drive bike path in Canberra, between the underpass and Atkins St. And he's ANGRY! He got me four times, grabbing onto my shirt and hitting the helmet hard. Just brushed my ear each time, but no blood for the big points. I don't really have a viable alternative path, so I think I'll be scoring big before too long.

First runs on the board: 8

I've got some motivation to solder up my little HD camera now too...

It seems everytime I go for a ride the maggies are there waiting!!
Got opened up twice on the same ear by a feral bird on Lane Cove Road, Hallett Cove in SA.
Swooped on the way from Yankalilla to Victor Harbor 2 weekends ago.
Got opened up again last Saturday morning on the way to buying the new bike (Specialized Roubaix sl4) from the Bike Society in Brighton.
(Just near the train crossing at Edwards St) and swooped the following day riding along side the Happy Valley Reservoir.
The ear is healed, but have a pic of last Saturdays damage.

cheers
Bill

I have what I call attack zones, when I left this morning I thought I only had 3 attack zones to worry about, I can add another 2 zones today

Left home at 6:20 and as soon as I leave my street I am in zone 1, I was on the lookout but I was lucky and I managed to pass through without coming under attack

About 15 minutes later I approached attack zone 2, I knew my luck would not hold out and sure enough I came under sustained fire, 6 swoops and he connected on 4 of those, he is an aggressive bugger

I approached what I thought would be my last attack zone and like the first I was lucky. I thought that was it but as I climbed canterbury rd towards the 7/11 at boronia road he came, 3 swoops and 1 contact. I got stopped by the lights and luck for me he didnt attack a stationary target

The next spot was on the 1:20 but it wasnt that bad and just 2 swoops but he didnt get close

I hate the little buggers, scare the hell out of you when your huffing & puffing up a hill

Carryover - 7 points
11 swoops - 11 points
5 contacts - 10 points

new total = 28 points

An even dozen close swoops (within 1.5m) on Wed. and today no less than 15 swoops with 1 contact (same magpie same spot on my helmet)

Under Seige....... :D

Running, ducking, dodging (and swearing) total of 69 points.......

Didn't know there was one on the 1:20 :-( I was swooped a few weeks ago on a 3rd repeat of Terrys. That was too much! It's bad enough getting to the top as it is :-)

Had my first claws in my back yesterday on the far side of Arthur's Seat. I wonder if they go horseriders too?

Only 2 swoops, total 8.

But a 1.25 metre dead brown snake that looked alive as I nearly ran over it.
On the living side, an echidna and a very young fox. :)

Nearly had to have a change of undies today along Arthur's Seat Rd in Red Hill.
At least 5 swoops with blood curdling screeching. 2 contacts as I was madly waving my empty bidon above my head.
Funny thing is, I did the opposite direct last Sat and nada swoops.

Buggers

So that's me at 9 I think

Apparently today was not the day to go out for a ride. Only a short 30 km ride but got swooped 22 times!

Visiting Wodonga at the moment, very diferent experience as the Tassie birds don't seem to swoop.

Yesterday riding Wodonga to Barnawatha - 10 hits on the helmet and probably 20-30 other swoops. The 10 hits were from the 1 bird - 8 on the way out into a headwind, 2 on the way back with tailwind. Solid knocks, with the feel of feet scratching at the back of my neck during each one.
Today in the Indigo Valley - 6 hits by 1 bird, softer than yesterdays bugger - probably another 30 or so swoops from other birds.

It's like riding from territory to territory with nowhere to hide. Not sure what this means for points.

Ha! The ride to Barnie is notorious for its vicious magpies. Take care out there as the local maggies love to swoop

Another 50km today and decided to keep an accurate tally: 37 swoops + 12 hits of the helmet (49 all up). So I appear to be getting hit once every 4 or 5 swoops and swooped about once per km. Not sure if my chances of being hit on the helmet have doubled because I'm from Tasmania (I'll let you think about this self depracating comment...), or if this is about average? 1 bloody bird near the Sumsion Gardens in Wodonga accounted for 8 of these hits, and another at Thurgoona the other 4.

The riding is brilliant around here, but I'm looking forward to getting back to the non-swooping Tassie magpies.

Made the mistake of thinking that eye baling a maggie would deter attack. It was like watching a rocket approach.

But so far this season, no contact.

+3 = 11points.

Can swoops while walking be counted, or only while riding?

If swoops by walking are included, I opened my account on Thursday, when a particularly aggro pair of maggies took offence to my passing, having roughly 15 goes, none making contact.

If they're invalid due to not being on a bike, then the account was opened today, with two non-contact swoops.

So the score: 2 confirmed, or 17, pending clarification of the rules.

PS: I've also had a couple of maybes on the commute to work, but I'm not counting them firstly because they don't come within the 1.5m scoring zone, and secondly because I'm not sure if they're tentative swoops or just coincidental alignment of their shadow against mine in the morning sun. I'll keep monitoring that location.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

3 swoops, 1 contact (at last) = 5 points

16 points

and on the roadside:

1 80 cm tiger snake (actually crossing the road)

2 echidnas

1 koala (lolloping along till I stopped for a photo)
