And especially especially if some of the claimed benefits of fasting turn out to be even a little bit true.
I'm just reading an article about that now. Interesting.

So - time for an update.

Unfortunately I did not reach my goals and have only got to 103kgs and have been unable to ride since April.

Problems started off with appendicitis - remove one appendix.

Purchased winter kit and was just about to recommence commuting when diagnosed with intestinal condition. No riding.

Two days later, scans for intestinal condition reveal kidney tumour. Remove one Kidney. Now recovering at home and fighting a couple of infections with no end in sight. Really want to get back on the bike and start moving again!

There is a message though - for all the guys out there, if you are sick, unwell or something does not seem quite right, please do something about it. If it wasn't for my nagging wife I would not have sought treatment and my tumour would not have been detected until it was too late. Now I have been given a second chance.

The old adage of harden up should no longer apply to men's health. Trust in the professionals!

Up and down last few months. Back to where I was in April now. Not paying too much attention to diet and exercise. Just happy maintaining.

At the start of this year I weighed just over 95kg. As of this morning I am down to 75.4kg only 1.4 off my goal (hit 74 then stabilise at 75kg). It has been a gradual process with a few periods of stalling and of big losses but in the end it really has just come down to consistency.

So first time poster in here, anyway just finished a quick ride to waterfall and weighed in, happily down 6kg since the end of July.

O and to the guy in the Chrysler that passed me on route, yes thank you for pointing out the obvious, I am overweight, but as I pointed out , it could be worse, I could be driving a Chrysler....

I was 84-85kg until November last year, then extra work stress, and an occasional bottle of wine saw me blow out to 92kg.
Anyway, I am gradually reeling it in....though a bit too slow. This morning I was 87.5...but am aiming for 78kg which should see my bodyfat at 7-8%.
If anyone is interested in a bit of light hearted and supportive wt loss competition, I've adapted a spreadsheet one of the guys on Transitions triathlete forum created. They have been running a similar comp over there. The idea is that tomorrow morning, you record your weight as soon as you get out of bed and relieve yourself, then weigh yourself every Monday for 10 weeks, and record your weight on the spreadsheet. The person who loses the highest % of bodyweight wins! (I know, not really fair to less fat people, but it's all about supporting each other).

Here's the link to the spreadsheet.

I can sort out editing permissions if necessary.

Well, the start of the plan went well. I went from 87 to 82 over summer/autumn, and hoped to plateau over winter.

Did reasonably well... maybe gained a kilo or so... and then went for a week's holiday in Queensland. Came home weighing 87kg

Granted, a good bit of that was temporary. Disruption to routine and some unbridled gluttony that took time to resolve itself. A couple of weeks later, I'm now stable on 84kg.

Over winter, and especially on holidays, I've been gaming my own simple rules. Maintaining the 16-ish hours fast every day (with very occasional exceptions), but then gorging. Eating breakfast+lunch for lunch (plus my daughter's leftovers, especially when eating out), snacking on whatever all afternoon, then a big dinner (plus my daughter's leftovers). Washed down with a beer or two more often than I should.

So, here I am checking in again, ready to start getting serious for the summer. Sensible portion sizes. Cutting out the snacks. Sticking with the breakfast-at-noon thing because it's easy.

Age: 38
Height: 178cm
Peak weight: 95kg
2013 starting weight: 87kg
Current weight: 84kg
2013 goal: something starting with a 7

You are doing well! I was 87 at the start of the year and 91 now. Bad food choices. :(

Ride more if you can. Then you'll get rid of those kilos. :)

Through some high intensity training and long distance riding, I'm now down to 59kg (174cm height). I'm really happy with that. 8) On a road bike, I just feel a lot stronger, fitter and better than I ever used to be.

And a few years ago I was basically unhealthy and probably a walking disaster about to happen.

Age 57
Height 168 cm
Weight 76 kg May 2012
Weight 62 kg Jun 2014
I cycle around 100 km per week.

It all started with severe digestion issues the doc puts down to a hiatus hernia. However I suspect that I had been developing wheat intolerance for the last 4-5 years and the resulting abdominal pressure caused the hernia. In any case I figured I had to lose weight to ease that pressure or I wouldn't see another year, so back on the bike I went. It’s been a trial and still is sometimes. I have to be very careful not to over eat. Small amounts only as a little too much and there is hell to pay. Tried eliminating certain foods but have reintroduced eggs and dairy but absolutely no wheat or corn in any form. Even have to be careful with the amount of other grains though that seems to be improving now. So no pasta, bread, cake pastries, the list goes on...... I do get some carbs from fruit and veg but that is not enough to replenish energy requirements. I had set a weight goal of 65 kg but couldn't stop loosing as I was not able to process enough food and went as low as 60 kg, nearly passed out at the shops one day. I found I can tolerate fats like in chocolate  and have been able to put on 2 kg since then. So at least I can maintain and even increase weight which had been a significant worry. It seems I have not been consuming enough fats as my digestion issues have improved significantly with this.

No, I am not doing the Atkins diet. I am trying different things to see what works for me and what doesn't. Wheat is bad though no medical reason has been identified despite testing. It seems to me that wheat was making me sluggish and depressed as I feel much sharper and positive without it. It took a couple of months to get it out of my system but I can’t overstate how big a difference it has made with this.

It seems to be going pretty well at the moment and unlike other things I have tried appears to be working in the longer term. I have maintained a stable weight for a few months now. It would be nice if I can put on some muscle, that’s my next goal.

If I have any advice to offer for weight loss, it's cut the carbs, they just make you crave for more carbs and get on the bike.

Regards,
Ken

1st time poster here. Looks like a great forum.

Almost 40 (aaarrgghhhh!!!!)
192cm
Shot knees so can't run...bike riding it is!
Start 11/6 (AT) 116.6kg
Now 11/7 (AT) 112.7kg.

Stepping up the intensity now.

Goal weight is 100kg as any smaller than that just looks and feels wrong.
