Yeah, I've seen this list before. And it also been posted on the CTC forum.

Comprehensive - yes, but complete? I doubt it.

The list of bikes available in Australia is probably more relevant.

Don't think much of their comments about geometry. They are misleading and could give the impression to the uninformed that that most of these bikes are somehow deficient. The type of person who would need to consult such a list would probably not understand this. I doubt there is anything wrong with the geometry of, for instance, a Koga Miyata World Traveller or a Tout Terrain Silk Road.

Yes, quibbling about 1 degree of head angle, or 10mm of chainstay does seem to smack of nit-picking to me. Mind you they seem to not be bothered by the same frame being used for drop bars and trekking bars - a really poor sizing compromise in my mind. No mention of this at all :?

Seeing the world has become such a smaller place its a good list to have. With online purchasing and cheap flights it wouldn't be too diff=icult to organise a bike from overseas.

And what about http://www.baumcycles.com The Burke and Wills touring bikes. Very expensive but very good.
As usual the Australian labour market and taxes make for an expensive product

No way I would be spending "Baum" money on a touring bike.

Touring bikes cop a hiding on the road and baggage handlers alike. I think I would prefer a cheaper, steel, of the peg bike that I would modify to my requirements. Something I am not going to cry about after I dent the top tube.

Just out of curiosity I wonder how much a steel or titanium Baum tourer would cost?

I believe you'd get no change from $5000.

Speaking of dented top-tubes, I bumped into a guy in the Grampians who had a new Thorn Sherpa that he'd imported from the UK. Nice and new, then when he pulled it out of the car he discovered a big ding in the top-tube - paint chipped and tube dented. He recalls that the bike was parked near his shed the a week or so back and the wind blew it over.... it fell sideways onto a metal table frame :( Ouch!!

A friend of mine had this happen to his custom-built touring bike some years ago - it was in a rear bike rack and the driver drove through a ditch. Bikes clipped the ditch and his was forced out of the rack, denting the tube. He was pissed, but put up with it for a while, then asked the frame-builder about repairs. Their advice was that it was not worth trying to repair - too expensive to replace the tube. Structurally little concern and it was best to just fill the dent if the look bothers you. What my mate had done in the end.

Not quite as much as I'd expected.
Beyond my budget but is that for a complete bike or just the frame and forks?

I think that'd be for the complete bike, but don't know how much beyond that their prices go. Talk to Baum I guess.

Nah, Kevin Wigham in Melbourne would be my choice for custom built (steel) if I were ever to go down that road again.
Had one of his Paconi branded road bikes in the late '80's. I believe he was Cecil Walker's frame builder at one time too.
It was a nice bike, Reynolds 753 tubing I think, downtube shifters, complete Dura Ace bits including hubs, headset, quill stem and seatpost and Mavic rims.
I sold it not long after I stopped racing (and riding), wish I hadn't.

Since we are talking touring bikes, Tim Stredwick's Velosmith may be a better choice. You can get prices here.

I like the Baum's but I think they're over priced when you can get as good for half the price overseas...see so many of them about now they're no longer unique in my opinion...never the less nice bikes though.

Baum price

Postby onrbikes » Tue Oct 08, 2013 9:26 pm

I think the $5000 is pretty conservative.
I did enquire last year and recall the frame alone was about $4500. Lovely kit but pricey. A said before, you could pick up may a good tourer overseas.

Went for a Thorn Raven instead.
My wife got sideswiped in China and the bike ended up being jammed under the guard-rail, and the bike suffered a seriously bent fork. Just a bit of readjusting of the fork and off we went. I would have my doubts about a non steel bike.

Oh, and the wife suffered a badly dislocated finger and numerous abrasions. On the road the next day.
