MTB trails close to stations in Melbourne

Any suggestions for trails that starts near train stations in Melbourne? i.e. don't have a car.

From Hurstbridge you can head to Smith's Gulley and Kinglake. If you're fit you can get to Lysterfield from Belgrave, as well as the trails around the Thousand Steps.

Hallam is closer to Lysterfield.

Thanks, looks good from the maps. How hilly is the terrain, I will probably try ride Belgrave to Dandenong station via Lysterfield. Looks to be about 15-20ks.

I've never ridden it, but others have and there are apparently off road bits. The drive is up and down, mostly down.

Hallam is closer, as Duck points out, but more time spent with traffic I suspect, and a nice climb up North Hallam Road. :)

Recommended tyres/pressure for gravel grinding?

I currently have my CX commuter shod with Schwalbe Marathon Plus 28s, but I also have the folding Conti CX 35s that came on the bike.

First, burn the marathon plus'. Heavy & dead.

Second, high enough not to pinch flat, which depends on tyre width, your weight and riding style, personally I'm around the 30-35psi mark. Slicks are usually fine unless it's muddy. The routes are mostly dirt/gravel roads after all.

Contis would be the best of your options.

Hey, it's a commuter - I need the puncture protection :P

I'm at about 85 Kgs at the moment.

I'm still new to riding with any form of slick tyre, so I am a bit wary of a smooth tyre on gravel - I keep thinking the punctures will happen all the time.

I run the SMPs at around 80 PSI for the commute.

Off topic tyrechat:

I commute on Ultremo ZX 28mm tyres at ~50-60psi or Grand Bois Hetres 650bx42mm, ~30-40psi (~60kg).

No puncture belts, no liners, just very supple carcasses and high quality rubber.

No flats either. ;)

If you want a nicer slick around the 30mm mark, try the 700x35mm Kojak (kevlar), or Resist Nomad (wire, cheap, 28/35/45mm). I also love Challenge Parigi-Roubaix (or the new L'Eroica) & Grand Bois Cerf (26/30/32mm), but they're a bit more $.

The Durano (not the plus!) can be had in 700x28, they're less than half the weight of your bricks, will roll much better and have a bit more protection than the ultremo. But if you must use Marathon's, at least get the 35mm Racer version.

Hallam is closer to Lysterfield.
From belgrave you drop straight into 'birds land' and onto gravel. an easy warm up before you hit the trails.

On google maps it doesnt look like it from Hallam>?
