I'm sorry ADI13 that my or other's comments may have suggested this. I don't think anybody was judgemental about you. I've worked in retail and some friends still work in retail and my views are affected by that. But as I've been at pains to point out, my comments are MY code.


(Anyway welcome to the forum! Though please don't mention going through red lights, helmets or a single negative about Lycra because then people will get nasty. )

The CAAD10 will have stretched my budget way beyond what I could/can afford at the moment but I just had to have this bike, and YES I could have got the CAAD8 or something else but would have regreted it and wanted to upgrade pretty much straight away, so that would have been a waste of money. I think all I am trying to say is that I dont want to be thought off as a low life that takes advantage of the local Australian LBS for my own gain as this is definatly not the case even though it came across like that. In saying this I think I will just save more and wait to purchse the shoes from my LBS and buy a set of SPD pedals that allow me to use normal runners untill I have the money for the proper shoes.

Here's a thought: try some AUSTRALIAN online shops. TBSM in Mortdale springs readily to mind and so does Cell. There are others. My Click'r shoes and pedals cost about $120 - $130 as a complete set from TBSM online (actually, I paid the online price at the shop, they fitted the cleats to the shoes for nix and I got a cup of coffee thrown into the bargain. Nice.)

The whole reason people on here buy from wiggle, chain reaction both woolworths and bunnings in the bike world... Is because............ They're........ C h e a p e r ... And postage speed and costs are good.

I'm not one to do the try here buy elsewhere for the reasons stated, definitely not /B in my book.
But judging others without being fully aware of their particular situation isn't very /B either...

I'd suggest going into the LBS and being upfront about what you want to do and why. They might surprise you. Failing that, I've gone into one of those specialised sporting shoe shops and asked to be measured on their fitting machine, cost a fiver but makes buying online a lot simpler.

Hi all back again, so the time has come to actually purchase the shoes, so can you all let me know who has the best selection and range of shoes to go and try (yes I will be buying from the store and not online) in melbourne, I live in croydon, work in st kilda but dont mind having to travel to do so. I have decided to actually go road shoes and not mtb shoes.

If you want Shimano go to Adrenaline Cycles in Ringwood, his prices on Shimano gear are about as good as you can get online.

Welcome to the forum and I hope you don't get too dizzy from all the help.

I have bought a lot online and a lot locally too. The things that you need to buy local are items that will be personally attached to or in contact with your body.

You will need to try on many shoes considering foot shape and size. Some brands have a wider forefoot and footbed shapes vary too. It won't be until you go on your epic all day ride that the shortcomings will start to kill you either in sores, aches or strains.

Things like shoes, saddles and knicks should be tried first and feel perfect the first time you put them on. An understanding LBS owner will know all this and their advice, just like here, is invaluable. Don't be afraid to ask anything.

You've got a great bike, have the right gear to make it enjoyable. If you know anyone that is an experienced cyclist ask them to go with you.

Shimano have a shoe size guide, check your normal shoes you have and cross reference. With shimano I found I always go the next size up unless you have a real skinny foot. If you go to the bike shop to try shoes on you don't have to buy them, you could buy something else like your cycling gloves or a tube and or etc.. Being really friendly and informative is how you get people to come back or decide to buy on the spot.

My thoughts would be to buy Speedplay cro-moly pedals ( about $140 online) which are the most forgiving and adjustable. If you get the Kool covers you cleats will last for a long time.
for shoes, just get something that fits and don't get caught up in brand names. comfort is the main thing.

I have used MTB spd for 20 years and love them!
Recently I put spd-sl on my road bike because I thought I should at least try using road cleats once in my life. The shoes are definitely lighter and firmer on my feet, and you do get used to the different clipping-in process. To this day however, I still find a steep hill start harder in the sl's than the MTB pedals... I will keep training and I am sure it will eventually become second nature, but it still nags away in my head that I felt 100% confident in every situation with the mtb's.

As for buy local; I am happy to pay for the service and backup support I get from my two local bike shops. Yes, it definitely costs more, but they have helped me out tremendously and I value that too.

I buy plenty of stuff online too; but it is all the stuff you can get locally...

The lbs's are a long way ahead on my spending patterns though. Probably 90% of my spend goes to the local boys and 10% online... I guess I just like the human touch...

I was telling a friend about my trials, and they thought it was wierd that to unclip i had to turn my heel in towards the bike, as theirs they had to turn their heels away. Are mine in the wrong feet? I really am not too sure, and didn't like the service i got from the shop since, and think they wouldn't tell me if they were wrong anyway! Any advice would be great

might be worth posting which ones you got, as far as i know, shimano and crank brothers mtb cleats will release twisting both ways, i don't think there are left/right specific.

Cleats are not foot-specific, so it's either a technique problem, a setup problem (most likely), or maybe a bit of both. You will need some degree of rotational adjustment to suit how your feet naturally sit. If the cleats are out of alignment, then you will find it more difficult to uncleat in a particular direction.

They are shimanos. I've tried adjusted the tension in the pedals, but that hasn't seemed to work. Technique then maybe I guess

They should release both ways, otherwise you may end up injuring yourself when you fall. When you fall on your side you naturally roll to push your face away from the ground. One foot unclips opposite to the other, if it dosent your In trouble

My pedals all release both ways. I almost always go heel out. Shimano XT SPD, 105 SPD-SLs, and as of yesterday Speedplay Zeros.

Cleats must be properly aligned.

I have found recently, and I'm not sure why, that I clip out by twisting inwards, if i am rolling up to a stop light then that is what I do. I don't think I used to and have been on spd's for over 20 years. I tried fiddling with the cleats but to no avail. It's not like I can't clip out the normal way and do in the emergency foot out, just the cruisy moments.
