Variable conditions in Melbourne for the ride back yesterday afternoon. Had an appointment in Carlton North with the family, got slightly rained on during the ride there. At 3:30pm, Mrs TW and the kiddos headed back home in the car and I hopped on the bike for the remaining 22km back home, blue sky above.
As I was nearing Reservoir, it started bucketing down, and the rain persisted for the remaining 10km or so. Arrived home, opened the garage, and was surprised that the car wasn't inside. Took off wet kit, wiped bike down, then Mrs TW arrives. "Did you stop off at the shops...?" I ask. Nope, she drove home directly. So despite me riding 22km vs her 19km back, I still arrived 5 mins earlier. Another win for the bike!

Chilly again this morning, but dry.

Weird weather...
Rode home in 37degrees last Thursday, with a hot wind... Was high 30's again on Sunday.
Left this morning at 5.45am to do the extra long 52km commute to work... Was 3 degrees & I had to pull out the arm & knee warmers... The latter staying on all 52 km..

I saw a guy my Dad's age who would sprint up to anyone at any speed, and cruise much slower, then sprint to latch onto any next person passing them.
I didn't notice it until I saw him baulk the riders passing so he could latch onto them easier.
Has an odour of post-ride "there, there..." place to it =D

I had a brisk commute in this morning. I have to leave early so I left home a 6:07. There were very few cyclists in my direction at that time of day.

In other news, the early cyclists at work are very chirpy and "good morning" each other. Some one needs to teach them some manners. The late crew (i.e. me) know how to conduct themselves properly and don't even make eye contact

First Commute with powertap installed this morning for a bit of a play.

Now I can tell everyone I'm on a "recovery ride" when I get blown away by kids with training wheels.

Interesting to see the difference between Strava made-up guesstimate power and actual power.

I no longer produce 1.3KW spikes in power on the way to work.

But!

I do consistently generate 500-750W for reasonable periods to haul my fat @rse up some hills.

Afternoon commute: Melbourne CBD (Work)-> Carlton North (Appointment) counts Carlton North (Appointment)-> Mill Park (Home) doesn't replace car journey so it'd be recreation trip.

the problem is a journey occurred on the bike that did not replace another form of transport. Where's gretaboy????

I see lots of guys do that- found myself doing it this morning enforcing a guys natural CCR pecking order- went to overtake on a rise to find a succession of guys (four) already in the process of overtaking us, So tagged onto the back of these guys (but NOT realsucking, sorry wheelsucking). Good grammar does not an enforcer make- you need spades of stupidity (me).

P.S me being an enforcer is sarcasm in the extreme- I am still fighting to get out of my wet brown paper bag from lunch (also wondering how I got in the brown paper bag also)

Had a pleasant commute this morning with not a puff of wind. The best bit was it was my first commute to work in daylight in 6 months.

After a run of bad luck with cars, I invested in a cheap action cam and mounted it on the right side of my helmet. Last week everyone behaved, but it was a cheap and nasty camera and the footage is terrible. I have since mounted a better one on the handlebars and this morning the bad behavior was back. For the afternoon ride I strapped the other one to the helmet again and I assume the camera is a visual deterrant for moron motoring because the trip was without even a close pass.
And while shopping I purchased a mirror which I find gives me a bit of fore warning for shoddy driving so I can anticipate how bad an overtake might be.

Perhaps the bike didn't fit in the car with the rest of the family. With a lift home he would need to fetch it, so the commute should count double

I still see it as recreation. A car trip from carlton was still required.....

Well.... Ride home..

Summary: 1x 60mm frame crack, 1x scratched rim, 2x scratched hoods, 1x busted tyre and 2x KOMs.

Last corner from home, was coming in a bit hot (although I don't think that was the problem), and for some reason pulled the back brake harder than I should have and locked the back wheel. Front turned a little to the left, I let go of the brake, and headed straight for the gutter.

That's about as much as I can remember, popped up the sheer gutter, popped the front tyre/tube (no rim damage afaik), and went down on the left hood, my shoulder, my head, and my elbow.

Got straight up, immediately worried about what I'd done to the bike, picked it up, and walked straight home..

Not really sure how, but I also scratched the front of the right hood on what looks like the foot path.

Later inspection showed a small scratch on the rear rim, which was cured with some sandpaper.
Tyre and tube was replaced, bars straightened up, everything put back together, to notice a 60mm long crack in the top tube...

Devastated Not really sure why I did it, as I rarely touch the rear brake with more force than a pinkies worth.

Going to get a quote to repair the frame and paint by a place called paintmybike.com.au. It's very close to me. Any feedback on them, or frame repair in general would be amazing

In the end, I guess I've got to be happy it wasn't any worse than it was.. Still not my favourite ride of all time .

Also, I miss out on the free breakfast tomorrow .
