Chain ring noise problem?

Postby irrelevant_apple » Wed Oct 16, 2013 11:15 pm

there's a few clanks and grinding noises coming from the chain ring. It's only really in the big and four highest gears. I've noticed the chain doesn't line up smoothly at one point where the noise is loud. Is this all normal?

Here's a video showing the perceived problems

Better unprivate the video if you want us to take a look... :|

For a start, clean some of that muck off the chain and rings. What lube do you use?

Hard to tell, does it occur every crank rotation or at that point of the chain?

testing using chainsaw oil. Seems to work well. Problem isn't lube related as it happened before I started testing chainsaw oil.

every crank rotation that parts the loudest noise. But there's also noise coming out other points too. The part shown is the only visible reference I've noticed

earliest I remember noticing it was switching crank from standard to compact. Back then my hanger was bent so I thought it was that. Is the crank faulty? Also is the chain getting stretched abnormally like that?

Clean and inspect all the chainring teeth, may be a bit of damage snagging the chain slightly. Remember they won't all be the same shape out of the box.
Does it happen on both rings?

I'd check your chain .
Sounds like it the chain is rubbing on the front derailuer.
Had this happen once and there a few pins slighlty out whack, check for bent or dodgey links too.
What other noises can you hear and from where on the bike?
If its from the rear near/jockey wheels my money will be on the chain.

no sounds from other parts of bike. I've checked and adjusted the front derailleur and it's clearing fine. Ill have to test the small ring to be sure about it

running small small there's some very minor subtle noise. Small and middle rear gears no noise.

Studying the large chain ring I can't really note any striking issue? I.. don't know

edit: small big i meant. So lowest gears

It almost looks like your in a extreme cross chaining.

Is the chainring square with the frame?

It looks like the teeth is catching on the inside plate of the chain, are there any missing spacers to push the crank out further?

any proper way to measure the ring being square with frame?

The compact 4600 didn't come with any spacers. No spacers came off the standard 4600 either.

i think the only spacers are between the bottom bracket and frame. If you didnt remove the BB, maybe not the issue.

also if you didnt remove the bottom bracket then squareness is probably not the issue. I think the main place for it to be out of square is at the bottom bracket/frame interface.

Thinking along those lines, if you put the old crankset back on, does it line up to the same spot on the front derailleur as the compact crankset?

Thats all i got :(

yeah I didn't change anything to the bottom bracket.

I'll test the old standard crank to see when I remove the chain next for a degrease. Unless I should ASAP because of risk of stretching the chain like this?

Thanks for trying to think of the solution.

my understanding is there will be more wear on the chain when cross chaining. But I doubt it matters too much and chains are cheap.
