Darwin to Perth via Gibb River Road/Mt Augustus by Trike

Postby Aushiker » Fri Oct 18, 2013 5:27 pm

Chris is riding his trike from Darwin to Perth via the Gibb River Road (nearly 1,000 km of pretty serious outback riding) and another outback location, Mt Augustus, which I have had the pleasure of riding to and back from albeit on a Surly Long Haul Trucker. Chris is a pretty adventurous bloke in my view.

Mt Augustus one of Chris' destinations ...

I reckon it is well worth following his journal at CGOAB.

Thanks Andrew.
Must read this. I know quite a few who have done the loop on trikes but none who have gone this route.

I have been following Chris' trip via the CGOAB site, The first page I zeroed in on was the "Gear - with the benefit of hindsight" page.

One day next year this will be me although not this particular track, If I say it often enough it will happen. :-)

No. I wouldn't take a Mango down the Gibb River Road.

A

No intent to disparage Chris or his ride, he's completely inspiring, showing clearly that where there's will, you can find a way.

My concern is the opposite, that unrepresentative photos can continue stereotypes, in this case that the Gibb River Road is some major heroic endeavour which it's not, it doesn't come close to the effort required on, say, Cape York or the Great Central Road, let alone the Canning Stock Route. The photo above on his blog on 10 July "Flat and straight with a mostly hard under surface and the colour's not bad either" is more representative, ie, much of the road is good if not great riding, but I prefer his 5 July photo of "First camp on the Gibb River Road", that goes to the heart of why you might bike the GRR. It's a fantastic, rewarding ride, particularly if you take the time to visit Bell and Lennard Gorges, etc, along the way.

Actually I think everyone's on the same page, trying to enthuse others to get out there and ride these places rather than feel it's all too hard, the road is something to be feared. If Chris, aged 60 with a bad back can do it while biking Darwin to Perth, well, there aren't many excuses for more energetic fry.

Peace to all,

GJ

Kinda sad when posts saying the GRR is a " fantastic, rewarding ride" are removed from a thread about the GRR.

So, to repeat the GRR is a fantastic, rewarding ride.
