Recycling advice

For those who use gas canister stoves and wish to minimise the rubbish/use of resources involved, there is this advice from MSR about how best to recycle the canisters

That is all well and good advice when you are at home, but difficult when you are touring away. You can't throw canisters in the bin, and you can't carry them home if you are travelling by air. It's the reason I stopped using my canister stove a few years ago and bought a metho stove.

Until recently that is, when I discovered this device. Now I'm happy to purge, puncture and dispose of used canisters, and I can enjoy the convenience of cooking with gas once again.

I'd guess that 99.9% of such canisters end up in the rubbish bin.

What MSR are advising in that link is that such special devices are needless. Just purge the canister (stove attached, valve open and up-ended) then puncture with any suitable tool - can-opener, screw-driver, hammer & punch, ice-axe.... your choice. Just not a spark-producing tool like a saw. My Swiss Army knife has several suitable devices.

Reminded me, I need to pick up one of those refilling connector from eBay to refill these gas canisters. Unless needing to operate in cold environment, these can be refilled with cheap table stove gas cans from Kmart.

I've been doing it for years...just puncture it with a screwdriver, squash and dump in a recycling bin...

Good link, thanks. Being a current long-term traveller, as MSR correctly state, actually finding somewhere that will recycle the appropriately prepared can is the hardest part. Especially outside a capital city!
