"333" was Shimano's first 3 speed IGH, it's a stem shifter mounted on the top tube . RD looks like an Eagle with that big heavy steel bash guard.barefoot wrote:Interesting shifter on this old Malvern Star :-/

Sounds interesting. Somebody in the area (Perth) go take a look!
And also, this Tandem in Brissy is actually A total bargain. I'd bet that you'd get at least half your money back by selling off the Rohloff.

look at these Gumtree finds
NSW $220 http://goo.gl/PnMgF9" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
QLD $850 http://goo.gl/7bEOPS" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; from the future!
QLD $1150 http://goo.gl/TiJpC5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; OK.
I would need upgraded brakes though. 180s Hyd for the way I descend, like a stone as was lovingly put to me as I freewheeled past the Mrs Waka going up hill after the last downhill bit

One word of caution, Some early 90's Santana's had an issue with forks, 1" from memory. Santana does sell replacements.
Some interesting cable routing for the brakes. Perhaps this was an earlier version of a travel agent.
180 isn't big enough for tandems, 203 is most common. Lots of people use 622 discs though. Vs and a drum will cope with an awful lot. Downhill speed tends to be limited by the stoker anyway, I'm just lucky that mine is a hoon.
I've just 'upgraded' the heavy tandem to dual 203 mechanical discs. It started life with dual Vs, then with a disc on the back, now front as well. One of the main drivers for this was the ability to change wheels easily, since the training wheels and the race wheels have different rim widths which was a pain to keep adjusting each weekend. The Vs will be held in reserve and may find their way back on for CA races that might require them (although discs were permitted at the last minute for the most recent para-cycling nationals), and as a third brake for mountain rides.
The Vs alone certainly did the job in nearly all circumstances, and better than several bikes with discs we've ridden (although they might not have been as efficient as they could have been). We did lose a front tyre to overheating on one descent, but to put it in perspective 3 single bikes cooked tyres on that descent too so that circumstance is a bit unusual, a drum brake would have solved that one descent nicely.
If you want hydro discs then there is this:

I have posted all 3 of these to the local tandem group here, but no response so don't know if any late bids are planned.

Tandem by biekomelbourne, on Flickr
We walked for this bit, mostly because I was not confident enough in my handling skills, my hands were tired, and I didn't know the limits of our tyre traction on the gravel with the drag brake so heavily engaged. By the end we were happy to roll down a far steeper paved road with a sharp bend at the bottom, it was a lot of fun to let the drag brake go once we were around the bend and feel the bike surge forward.
We were around 170kg all up.

The pictures pretty much tell the story...
It has seen better days and looks to have had a front-on at some point so there is a bend in the forks and top tube

Partial honesty. They forgot the bend in the DTfind_bruce wrote:Honesty in advertising Malvern Star 3 StarThe pictures pretty much tell the story...

edit: This one,on the other hand..... looks like it has nice new lever hoods. That arent right for the levers and dont even come close to fitting..... and 62cm frame for "Medium to tall rider". Obviously has a very loose definition of medium height

Gave it some serious thought, but the complications of arranging a pick-up and freight, combined with the D-1 rule, caused me to restrain myself. Very cheap for what it is though.cray- wrote:And how the heck did this Proflex posted a few days back only go for $300??????

It's obviously not all there, in terms of authenticity, but there's some interesting parts there...
And since you guys all seem to want farm-gate-sized frames... how about a 64cm 531C custom in Darwin? Looks like he's willing to sell whole or part it out... the no-wheels option could be very good value.
