Not forgotten. Wasn't as painful getting up this morning as I feared, actually beat the alarm up and got here half an hour before registration opens. Feeling a little sleepy now though. See you here soon.

Grant, Best of luck with the Fitz today.

Good to catch up this morning mate. Pity about your finger after your crash. Hope it heals quickly for you.

My bike after 95kms of dust. I was glad I changed my gearing from 33-18 to 33-20.

Yeah, good to see you again. Finger doesn't feel to bad, even when I did it it looked worse than it felt. Hope your elbow isn't too serious either, always sucks when you think something is fixed then it plays up again.

So for this unaware as yet my Husky 100 turned into a Husky 36 when I failed to negotiate a right hand bend with a bit of a drop and went over the bars. Result was a left index finger dislocated and with a small fracture. A few following riders stopped to check on me and one stayed and called the race organiser for me.

As we sat and waited for assistance to arrive we watched as more rides had trouble with the corner. A few dismounts, Running off the track and last minute stops but thankfully no others joining me.

After a couple of minutes I decided to check google maps to find we where pretty close to two roads and another quick call and we headed up to the road where a vehicle was on hand to get me and the bike back to the event centre. St John's informed me they aren't able to put it back in place so I get a hand in getting the bike on the roof and head for home to pick up the family and then to the medical centre to get it put back in place. It's not just the quick yank like on TV, more a few seconds of manipulation just long enough for you to start thinking that maybe the pain killing injection would have been a worthwhile option. It takes a few minutes for the pain to fully subside during which time X rays confirm the small fracture before I'm cleaned up, bandaged and on my way.

Not the ideal final preparation for the Tour da Country but on the positive side my legs feel a lot better than if I'd finished the ride.

Also means my monthly distance PB will have to wait one more day with today's ride getting me over the 1000km mark but 5.4km short of July's 1011.6.

The moral of this tale is not to mountainbike a few days (or weeks) before an important event. Hope it heals well Shane! And well done Lewy :-)

I managed with the assistance of my good friend Ibuprofen to grind out a Fitz' Epic today. Fantastic organization and wonderful scenery.

Well done on the Fitz Grant.

First stage of the Tour done. We had 13 riders start plus another joining us later in the ride. Finger held up well. Made a quick list of points for when I get a chance to update the Tour thread. Tomorrow we ride to Ulladulla.

Nice to set a goal for the month & managed to sneak past it - will end up around 776k & slightly better than my previous best.

It turns out I spent about the same time in the saddle as de mac who smashed out over 1,400 km - seems I don't need to ride more, just faster

Well done Bruce :)

I'm limping home this month with 797km but a healthy 13480m of climbing. I think that's my highest m/km figure this year and I have the fitz to thank for that, but my clumsiness on the mtb has cost me.

My bruised ribs and now a shocking chesty cold (coughing with bruised ribs is great :-( ) has cruelled my Sydney Melbourne 1200 plans so I'm going to be sitting that one out and contemplating the next 12 months of Audax and general derring do. I'm already looking forward to the Alpine Classic and hopefully a year round award if I can manage to get a 200km ride in before the end of November (the year round award requires you to ride a 200km brevet every month (november-november) - I missed one this year).

Well done Bruce and well done on the PB Grant, sorry to hear about the Sydney to Melbourne though.

4 days into the Tour da Country and a few hundred metres detour back to camp saw me reach 1300.2 km, smashing my PB by almost 300km. The climbing also took a massive jump, improving by over 4000m to 17689m.

Much like Grant a MTB mishap cost me a bit extra and doesn't seem to have finished with me yet. While the finger gets better each day and had caused very little discomfort at all, my ribs, which up until today had only been a little tender if touched has started to get painful with certain movements, such as out of the saddle climbing. With a couple of easier days ahead I'm hoping for a bit of recovery before hitting Browns Mountain on Sunday.

Otherwise the Tour has been an awesome experience and when I finally get time to update the thread is going to be a big job remembering just the highlights.

Awesome stuff Shane. I've been enjoying the FB updates and videos, it looks like a terrific ride.

For the ribs I recommend arnica cream and codeine :-)

Good job Shane on a massive month. Sorry to hear you're not doing the Syd-Melb Grant.

This month I was just short of 500kms. Will try and improve that for November.

Great work Bruce, Shane, Grant, David, mugglechops, Mustang, et al.

As Bruce mentioned, I had a good October, managing my biggest month ever. The weather and work scheduling has been kind!

I'm heading back home this morning after a great week on the Gold Coast where I succeeded in keeping the family happy, whilst riding each day. I met a lot of fantastic people up here who ride from Nobby's Beach SLSC at 6am each day - very welcoming and highly recommended bunch.

The weather was average to good and I haven't ridden for so many successive days without rain in recent history!

Everyone seems to be going well - keep up the good work.

Cheers

Nice work guys, some big k's being accumulated!

Went out for Sat AM ride this morning, reduced bunch just me and a mate. A glorious morning, sunny, temp right and no wind, a quiet 48km. :D :D :D

First time my mate had been back on the bike since we did the ATB 210km ride 2 weeks ago; I had managed a ride last weekend. Well Dave set off like he was making up for lost (training) time, I took a few turns and tried to keep the pace up as best I could. After about 7 km's I asked if he had a hot date to get back for - we eased up a bit. It was only at coffee that we worked out we were both trying to keep up with each other :) . We pushed it along for a few sections and took it easy in others but after looking at Strava, I had 5 PB's, 2x 2nd best times and 2x 3rd best.

October's total was just 468km (included a 210km ride) and 1959m of climbing. YTD totals: 5026km (on track) and 46,400m of climbing (behind).

I hope to improve on the climbing in the next few weeks. I found last year that having achieved my big goal for the year (ATB 2012), I got a bit slack. So this year, I have set another goal of knocking off at least one of the 7 Peaks. The 7 peak series is unstructured and continues until the end of March, but in parallel, there are some organised rides with support/encouragement to help people get to the top; this is a loose association between The Climbing Cyclistand Hells 500 - it's called 7 Peaks Domestique Series. The first of these rides is 16 Nov 2013 at Lake Mountain. There is no entry fee, 290 riders signed up so far (over 70 women, they are trying to get over 100). Lake Mountain is 21.3km at 4.3%.

Happy Riding!!! :D

Great work C&W. I'm scared of hills but may do one or two of those climbs in the coming months....39/27 is my highest gear so I reckon I'll meet with some challenges! May have to keep the silly season consumption to a reasonable amount. ...hahaha.

Great suggestion C&W, my 7 peaks passport arrived today and between that and signing up for the ACE in January I'm feeling a little less miserable about missing the SM1200 next week.

I'm hoping to take a few long weekends in the next few months to explore the hills, it should be fun!

I like the 7 peaks idea & thought - we should do that in NSW until I realised you could walk 6 of the 7 in a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon, while another few hours walk would get you Mt Twynam as well. If you are feeling adventurous, you could throw in 8, 9 & 10 as well. Maybe I exaggerate a little but the top 10 are all within 12 km of each other

How about the 7 highest by region ?
  1. Snowy Mountains Mount Kosciuszko (2,228 m)
  2. Barrington Tops - Brumlow Tops (1,586 m)
  3. New England Tableland - Round Mountain (1585m)
  4. Nandewar Range - Mount Kaputar (1,508 m)
  5. Central Tablelands - Mount Canobolas (1,395 m)
  6. Mid North Coast region Mount Banda Banda, (1,258 m)
  7. Blue Mountains - Mount Coricudgy (1,255 m)
  8. Monaro region - Brown Mountain (1,243 m)
Not sure you would be able to ride up to some of the more remote mountains

It takes a bit more than that :D

I did it over 3 days back in 1998. We sort of cheated because we got dropped off in a Seaking then picked up again about 1km down the road from Mount Kosciuszko :D

Interesting Idea Bruce, looking at some maps there appear to be roads to the summits, or nearby for all of the routes (excepting Brumlow), might need a mountain or cross bike to get to them though.

Good to hear you're back out on the bike Grant, not so good that it's still painful. Well done on reaching your goal too.

I got back home late last night after finishing the Tour da Country yesterday. Was an amazing experience and it's going to take a while to get the reports together to tell the story in the thread. My injuries held up really well, my finger annoying me most in the cold of the Snowy Mountains but it was also one afternoon in the mountains that I managed to rack up my 100000m of climbing for the year, completing my main goal. The ribs had started improving by then, really only providing a few painful moments on Brown Mountain and occasional moments of discomfort after that.

The Tour also saw me comfortably past the 6999m of climbing for November and has gotten me to within 100km of last years pb for total distance. Now I guess my cycling focus can shift to December and beyond, starting with a training plan for the ACE250 and working on the second running of the Illawarra Dirt Series, commencing December 28, with the 70km Wingello Wandering.
