Aero Aluminium Wheelset?
Postby theprophet » Sat Oct 26, 2013 6:21 pm
long story short I need new wheels, old ones are destroyed. Will be going on a Cervelo S5 so would be ideal if they where reasonably aero and must be aluminium as I am a junior. There seems to be a few options out there so I would like to get some opinions on what you guys think. Aerodynamics is the first most important feature I am looking for, durability second and then weight. Also I would like to be able to get them as cheap as possible.
A few options I have at the moment are:
Pro-lite bracciano a42's
American Classic aero 420 3's (can get cheaper than retail)
any other aero suggestions?
Also might get some Ultegra tubeless wheels (again cheaper than retail)
so any opinions, advise or help is greatly appreciated

just sold them second hand about 4 months ago, see them flying around Port Lincoln regularly. I only got rid of them because I picked up a set of Zipp 404 tubies to race on and got sick of changing brake pads to train on the AC's

You must have had a later set; the old ones had a freehub design that routinely self-destructed and lost drive.bosvit wrote:I did about 20k on my AC 420's, good wheels, parts easy enough to get.

The 420 refers to the rim weight and not the depth. Like the AC350's that Mozzar loves - rims were around 350g (though now weigh closer to 375g).danny the boy wrote:AC 420's are bit misleading when its comes to aero, was surprised to read they use a 34mm deep rim.

But, the vast majority of the aero benefits are gained from using the deeper rim, not less spokes ....
As Keith Bontrager said, "if you want strong, light, and cheap, you can really only have two".
If you want aero + strong, light and cheap, again there will be compromises.
That said, a sensible spec (right rim, right drilling, right spokes, and smart hub selection) can still get you some alloy aero wheels that will be:
1. Not greatly heavier than a carbon equivalent
2. Just as stiff (if not stiffer)
3. More reliable
4. Not need special brake pads
5. Considerably less expensive
6. Similarly aerodynamic*
* always a contentious statement I understand, but there are really too many variables to say one wheel of a similar depth is more aero than another (unless you believe everything you read on the internet).

Other rim options would be Kinlin XC-279 and Pacenti SL23.
And, I would say aero is affected more by rim shape than rim depth, Shimano DA c24s and Corima winium+ wheels are fairly shallow (~24mm) and test fairly well in the wind tunnel (Tour & roues artisanales). Something like the Mavic Cosmic Carbone is much deeper (50mm) and doesn't perform as well.
