Crikeys- what do you have to do for it to be Cat 1

The main Strava segment on that road is 4 km with 420 metres vertical altitude gain.
Fastest recorded is an average speed of little more than 12 km/hr.
Slowest is only 5.5 km/hr, which is basically walking pace.

I'm not implying Strava is right, more likely first hand experience is more accurate.

The steepest Cat 2 climb I know of is Mystery Rd, so nasty I've never gone back.

At least Mystery Rds' agony is over slightly quicker than Henri Robert Dve!!
Neither of them are for the faint hearted.

We hit Henri Robert Dve 200kms into a ride once!!

I don't need to tell you the rest..... let's just say it got REAL ugly!!

As most if not all of the steepest streets appear to be on the North side of town does anyone have a list of the Southsides steepest streets? The only one i have ridden up (with a degree of difficulty) is Minerva st in Rochedale not sure how that would compare too others mentioned. Cheers in advance.

Strava categorize climbs by multiplying the average grade in % by the length of the climb in meters (not the height). Category 4 is for climbs with a resultant score greater than 8000 points, Cat 3 16000, Cat 2 32000 and Cat 1 64000 or better. Anything above 80000 points is classified HC. Climbs with gradients <3% or that score lower than 8000 are not classified.
Coot-Tha with an average 10% grade and 2.4km long is 10x2400 = 24000 points, therefore Cat 3.
Strava's system is based on the UCI's system, but differs in that the UCI adds in an element of where the climb falls in a race or stage, so what might be a Cat 1 early in a mountain stage, could very well be an HC if it's the stage finish.

This is my training route and there's heaps of great hills around here. Plenty near pullenvale with lots of different grades. All depends if you want to make it an actual ride or climb.

Yeah those Brookfield/Pullenvale climbs put hair on your chest alright !

Bit on the brisbane side of those is this one, http://www.strava.com/segments/1067660

the first third of it is sealed road, after that it is a dirt road with access limited by a huge steel gate.

Defeated me recently.
Got well past the 20% sign but around the corner it gets up to about 25% and that stopped the roadie.

Thanks for the segment mate! I've been in and around gap creek but I've missed your segment! I'm not sure but I think it might be one off one of the round abouts. Strava doesn't show roads that well so I can't tell but I'm guessing that's the one. Will tackle her soon and let you know if I die.

Yep, off the first round-a-bout on Gap Ck rd (top of Rocket Frog) is the entry. Have done it on the MTB but roadie would not be advisable

Mate - If you're looking for a nice ride around Kenmore / Brookfield, I highly recommend Upper Brookfield Rd. Its never too steep (up or down if that makes sense) and very picturesque. You can do Savages and Gold Creek Rds too if you want to do the 3 fingers, but UBR is the definitely the pick of the 3.

Here's a vid I made a year ago, riding UBR in my velomobile (recumbent tricycle with a fairing). The descent starts at the 2 min mark:

Savages is definitely my favorite of the bunch next to the traditional Upper B. I'm not sure if they're repaving Gold Creek (Savages was recently repaved), but that jittery ride to the creek is a bit too harsh for me on my frame. I dread it.

I imagine the ultimate leg annihilator would Grandview Rd > Upper Brookfield > Savages Rd > Gold Creek > Gap Creek > Haven Rd.
