Mark Textor: the white knight on his shiny unicorn etc
Postby The 2nd Womble » Wed Nov 13, 2013 11:38 pm
Safe Cycling Australia (on fb) at 8pm tonight:
In response to a journalist's enquiry of online cycling advocacy groups in Australia, here is what Mark Textor had to say less than an hour ago after recommending that we not be contacted at all:
RT @markatextor "(AT)********** follow us @amygillettfdn on safety issues. We are the only recognised safety group. Thank you for your interest in cycling."

I did think his comment was pretty off as there are other groups in various states doing excellent work ... suggesting that there is only the Amy Gillet Foundation did seem to be devaluing others efforts.

At one point he was the Chairman of the Board.Aushiker wrote:What exactly is Mark Textor role with the Amy Gillet Foundation and secondly why is he "important", i.e., why do we care what he thinks or says?

That had been my concern for a long time Andrew. It was their road or the high road for a long time. This attitude has ben quietly changing within the organisation for a short while now, but the few individuals within who continue to believe this statement holds true will always hold them back while others kick their lily white butts.
the sooner idiots like Textor bugger off, the better off cyclists will be.
At least what I've been saying for well over a year has now been very publicly vindicated.
Crap, I forgot the screenshot. Better take that.

I know it's twitter and the post length is limited but his claim that AGF are the "only recognised safety group" seems to be drawing a very low bow, quite aside from being a pretty rash generalisation.Aushiker wrote:I did think his comment was pretty off as there are other groups in various states doing excellent work ... suggesting that there is only the Amy Gillet Foundation did seem to be devaluing others efforts.
I don't know about other states but AGF has close to zero profile in WA. If they are our only hope, frankly we've got Buckley's.

Little wonder this lot are able to spoil it destroy the efforts of other groups.

When it comes to rider safety in this country, I'll take a Sharpie over a Textor any day.

Is there any sort of mitigating factor/context in which that claim is not grossly misleading and insulting? I've had an AGF metre matters sticker in my glovebox that I've been meaning to put on the bumper for a year or two now, but with this on top of the AGF's other shenanigans, that sticker is heading straight for the bin. I hope they're listening to this. The 2nd Womble wrote:Interesting. Is this the source of the (de)Nile?

SCA has without question done more in Qld than anyone from interstate, and yet we've never recieved recognition or assistance in any of our campaigning. That's fine, such help isn't merely expected, but it's attitudes such as Mark Crayon's that have seen them in particular -rather jump onboard - come in over the top, hit us and the increasingly large number who support us very hard, drown us out and say god knows what to sponsoring MP's and corporate potentials, not to mention the cycling community.
My hunches may take a while to fire on all cylinders, but they're usually on the money. I'm thinking after a good night's sleep that I have been wholly vindicated and I'm actually relieved.

I'm hoping that provides all the context. If there's other tweets that are relevant and add to the context, please let me know so I can add them. Those tweets left out by me are either tweets I'm not aware of or tweets I didn't feel were required for context despite being part of the conversation.

1. someone posing very hard as a surfer or skateboarder.
2. someone that goes to every surfing or skateboarding event to hangout, compile pictures, start conversations, and generally be seen with real surfers or skateboarders.
3. also see: gayrab
"Dude, did you see that kook trying to drop in on me the other day?"
Pffft, I hate skateboardists.

It's a shame - and his comments make me very, very angry.
I see AGF as a front for pro-pedestrian and motoring groups, personally. Because they seem to do everything they can to sabotage the work of effective pro-cycling advocacy groups.

And what do you think is the frikkin wedge dill?
Could it be your cosy little enclave of feelgod groupthink not wanting to derail the gravy train of Govt funding doing its best to kill off perceived opposition from the grassroots?

AGF got to where it was by working WITH other groups and asking other groups to provide support. They saw the olive branch and provided the help and support asked. Mark is just undoing all of that with his attitude. The best thing the AGF could do would be to disassociate themselves from him, reassure everyone he doesn't speak for them. That's what I'm pushing to get out of them.
