Music while commuting (Bluetooth? Bone Conduction?)

I am trying to figure out a way to listen to my phone (ideally with the ability to receive calls) while cycling to and from work each day.

What I want is:
To be able to hear my phone sounds/music/etc
To be able to hear external sounds (essential - I am *not* looking to block out the world)
Wireless is better than wired, so I can have my phone in a top tube bag

I use Jaybird/Bluebuds for jogging, they are wireless and I highly recommend them. They have phone capabilities too

The Backbeats Go 2 and the Jaybirds are the two I have narrowed down. But can't pick which one.

My phone lives in a pouch on the shoulder strap of me backpack, if I want sounds I just let the built in speaker do the work.

That very much depends on how high you turn up the volume.

The fact is that they make most cars that quiet these days that I dont rely on hearing them anyway. If I am on a busy street I just accept that they will be coming from behind and deal with it.

On roads with lots of traffic, hearing's not especially useful. A mirror, though ...

i use a set of bluetooth nokia bh-503's,can still hear everything around me,take calls and the sound isn't too shabby

FFS it isn't too hard.

I just use the !! BAN ME NOW FOR SWEARING !! headphone/microphone that nokia provide, cut the right earphone off so you can hear traffic/ambient noise, can get calls handsfree when you touch the button on the clip provided, can listen to music at an appropriate volume too.

Safe and no problems.

I would say better than motorists in their cages some with both ears plugged by earphones or doof doof from subwoofers.

I reckon that if you need to hear what's coming up behind you to sense danger then it it too late anyway!

Agreed. A mirror is better if you're serious about safety.

What's the sweatproofness/waterproofness of the above? I've just gone thru my 3rd pair of "sweatproof" sennheisers, due to them not being anywhere near sweatproof....

I was at ausbike and they demonstrated bone conducting Headphones very impressive nothing on the ears at all

I've used a Blueant Q2 for the last two years. It's a standard bluetooth headset, has held up well and leave's one ear free for all ambient surrounding noises. That said I mainly listen to podcasts / news radio on my commute so I can't say how good it is for music

I also catch up with podcasts on my commute.

I'm usually donning a helmet mirror, but every now and again my spider senses tingle around a shopping centre or certain streets and I unhook an earphone.

I just add a platic-covered stiff wire handle to all my radios and hang them in my teeth. It looks silly but, as I don't get to look at myself, that's for other people to worry about.

It is far better for general situational awareness than headphones or buds.

I have had a go using my phone on speaker mode attached to my stem cap.

This is a functional solution, but I appreciate that not everyone in the CBD wants to listen to Repo! The Genetic Opera while walking around.

That said, if someone *does* call out at me when riding, I'd like to be able to hear it.

I think I might give the Aftershokz Bluez a go (in spite of their abuse of the English language), although I'm not sure how they will interact with my sunglasses.

On your recommendation I bought a backbeats go 2, but they weren't flash... Audio was good, but even in the car, the quality of the voice via the microphone was terrible... Siri couldn't even understand me! Very disappointing as otherwise it would've been perfect!

Both my Android phones have no problems with voice controls.

I would suspect that that most of your voice problems stem from the cheap microphone that Apple uses. Everyone I know that uses an iPhone has a crazy sounding voice over the phone

That's the notion behind *not* wanting it in my ears.

For the time being I am using the speaker on my phone, which is mounted on my handlebars as it also serves as my GPS and Strava unit. This works for me, but possibly bugs the hell out of other cyclists.
