Anzac Bridge video

Postby find_bruce » Thu Oct 31, 2013 10:56 am

Today on my ride to work I saw two people hiding behind a pylon on the Anzac Bridge with a Go Pro videoing people as they rode across the Anzac Bridge. Didn't appear to have any other equipment, just a GoPro on a tripod

Anyone know who they are or why they were videoing ?

Nothing I intend to admit to

Not so much a guilty conscience, or even vanity, as curiosity

Like the captain, my first thought was arald screwloose & yet another beat-up, this wasn't professional equipment & the wide angle of a Go Pro will make everything look off in the distance. The 2 people had the bored look I remembered so well from university

Or some background shots for a weird adult movie:
"Frauline, do you need some help?"
"Ya, my tyre is flat"
"Ya, I have a big pump right here"
"Ya"
"Ya"

They were also on the Lane Cove to City cycleway on Thursday just under the Herbert St bridge. I noticed them to and from work, keeping a tally and filming with the same gear as above.

Saw them again this morning on the Gore Hill Bike path just under the Herbert St bridge. Right at the corner where some people get a little sloppy on staying in their lanes.

So I stopped and asked what they were up to.

They said they were from UNSW and were doing a study on shared paths behaviours/interaction. Not much elaboration than that. They had two Gopros running, I assume to record what was happening and then analyse distances etc etc.

SO if you see them, give them a wave and say hello - to show cyclists are all such a great bunch. 8)

Going by the locations I'd suggest the study was on behaviours at pinch points (I haven't actually ridden Anzac Bridge myself but I hear it is quite tight). The question is, are their aims to shame cyclists for veering on tight corners/pinch points, on councils for putting these blind tight corners/pinchpoints in, on pedestrians for being all over the place even near such locations, something else all together, or a combination of the above?

I saw a couple doing the same in Prince Albert Park (Cleveland and Elizabeth Sts) this morning.

If they wanted to deal with pinch points, they would have used a different point on Anzac Bridge, not there where it is as wide as it every gets. Saw the same set up on the "shared path" aka footpath on Victoria Rd near Darling St - again not the pinch point behind the bus shelter or the numerous poles randomly scattered on the path, but at a spot where the path was clear.

Guess that means my presumptions about what they are doing were wrong. Thanks for the clarified/updated info. :)

They are doing a pedestrian/bicycle interaction study (I know as I stopped and asked them one day a couple of weeks ago). Don't know whether it was for a uni assignment etc or for some organisation.....

whoops, didn't see that snowie had already posted this info...

I saw them there, I was city bound. I got them on film too. I ripped it round that corner nice and fast and within my lane. I hope it was a nice action clip for their use!
