Cannondale Caad 8 105 2014 vs Trek Domane 2.3 2013

Postby Sepoy » Thu Nov 14, 2013 11:42 pm

Hi all. My much loved Trek 1.7 had a fatal encounter with a car a few weeks back and the Insurance money is about to come through so it is time to think about new bikes! I am looking to spend about $1800 all up, and the Cannondale and Trek seem to both be good options. I was very happy with my Trek, but the Cannondale is $200 cheaper and seems to offer similar componentry. Has anyone had experience with either of these two bikes?

The Trek Domane is a little more 'endurance' than the Caad8, and likely to be more comfortable on longer rides.

The Domane has a carbon seatpost as well as the IsoSpeed frame feature and runs 25c tyres standard, and a 12-30 cassette. In terms of comfort the CAAD8 basically only has a slightly higher head tube to reduce fatigue, referred to as 'heads-up race geometry', and has alloy seatpost, 11-28 cassette and 23c tyres as standard.

I haven't ridden either but I did source a 2nd hand Caad8 (2011) for a friend recently and he is quite pleased with it, and completed the ATB100 recently, riding 120kms all up on the day.

So it might depend on what the majority of your riding is..... maybe how old you are .... how fast you want to ride etc etc.

Thanks, that is a very good run down of the two bikes. I am 25 and mostly ride for pleasure in and around Sydney. The 1.7 wasn't exactly an endurance bike and I never had any trouble with it, but it sounds like a test ride would be a good idea.

For $1800 you'd be on a 2013 CAAD10 105 if you looked around - plenty on special at present. CAAD10 > CAAD8, whilst the Domane would be a good rig also, with relaxed geometry compared tot he other two.

I'd go for the Cannondale. Whether you get the CAAD8 or the CAAD10 depends on your budget. Cannondale are well known for making some of the best aluminum frames out there.

You should be able to find a caad10 at that price.

Yeah what Macca and Skull said. Caad10 is a good step up and you'd find for $1800 without much arm twisting. I reckon the Caad 8 and Domane you'd find for more like $1500-$1600. But ride them all and choose what suits for your cash would be my tip.

Yes, at age 25 you don't need a relaxed geo bike - go the 'dale and, as macca33 says, I saw a 2013 CAAD10 105 today for $1750, in Melbourne though ...

Thanks everyone. I am in NSW and I haven't found any CAAD10s in my size, (60cm frame) but I will keep looking.

:shock: Very tempting. If I can't find the CAAD10 in my size than I may have to run this by my girlfriend. It is pretty amazing how much prices seem to have dropped since I was last in the market for a bike.

I went to cell bicycles today to help a friend pick out a bike, and they had a full 105 carbon bicycle on sale for $1400. It is a 2014 model and there aren't any reviews of it up on the internet, but if he has a good experience it seems hard to go past that price. http://www.this link is broken/Cell-2014-A ... ory=387251" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Yeah very hard to ignore those cheap no name full carbon bikes from $1200 to 1500 from cell, cycling express etc. You really need to test ride them and compare with the big brand names because some feel better than others. It can be such an individual thing. You might also find the caad range a fraction lighter than some carbon ones.
