help

Postby dreamer » Thu Mar 01, 2007 4:43 pm

I am from China, plan to ride bike from Adel to Melb through Great Ocean Road, total 1100Km, spend 8 days. I use mountain bike, and carrying 20KG bags. I have following questions:
1. Wind direction. Does my way opposite the normal wind direction?
2. Any thing need to pay attention to?
3. Temperature is OK for T-shirt?
4. Is there always rainning?

Thanks in advance for help.

I'm from WA, but used to live there. Depending on the time of the year you should have a tail wind going to Melbourne.

Great Ocean Road is narrow and has lots of bends in some places. Get some mirrors for the bike so you can see what is behind.

In winter here, you may need a rain jacket and something warm when stopped.

No, it can get quite hot.

What time of the year are you planning to ride?

Thanks. I plan to go from 17th March. Hope there is no rain.

You may get some rain. It's hard to say with the weather being strange lately. I'd take a rain jacket if possible, just in case.

Thanks!

8 days for this 1100KM is enough?
Do I need carry tent? Are there many cheaper small hotels or not?

8 days = 137 km roughly per day. I average this on touring but travel fully loaded. It makes it a long day and I would not do 8 days straight, especially if it is hot.

If you are travelling light, you may be able to do it, but may not leave much time for sight seeing. On a mountain bike, your top speed may be lower as well.

I'm not too sure about cheaper hotels, maybe one of the other forum members may help there as I haven't been in the area for some years.

Thanks bicyclewa
I try to add 2 more days to get more time for sight seeing.

If there are many hotels available on the way, I'll not carry tent. It can reduce some weight. That is what I mean.

There is a touring journal of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria written by another cyclist in 2003. It may give you some further info on the road. It's at
