Answer their question with a short question and see if they respond

MarkG : Whilst statistics may arouse some of us more than others, at least Aushiker's contributions to this forums are constructive and less ego based than yours.

... but back to the original question of the topic.

I think a portion of it is people using the setting under the UCP to auto-subscribe to their own started threads or not. I think by default it isn't enabled. Such posters mightn't get a reminder by way of a "topic reply notification" by e-mail and people's attention spans being what they are, they may simply forget... or not be savvy enough to remember how to browse back to their post. For example, just how many people don't use the 'Search' function?

Certainly, I would prefer some sort of periodical daily/weekly mail notification of updates to a thread, rather as-and-when a new reply is posted since your last visit. I often forget when I've had a flurry of other e-mails that've swept away the notification.

Similarly, I think people replying, and then getting a constant Reply notification in turn as they waste time infront of the keyboard (Hey, we're all guilty of it at times, right?) discourages quality of comments in favour of quantity.

That only really allows for popular threads which 'float to the top'. Anything a little more locally specific or obscure, with an infrequent contributor-ship will likely get washed away by that means also.

In order to post stuff for sale the rules require 10 valid forum posts to prove a member is not a spam bot. I think I read the rules right.

But that only shows threads you've actually posted in, not ones that have just come up or you haven't commented in yet.

In that case your better of using Tapatalk on your phone. It lists all the new threads as they are posted from the latest back, regardless of what part of the forum they are posted in.

I sometimes register on a forum to ask specific questions about something relevant to the topic of the forum. Things that I want to know about now, but not things that I'm obsessive over and have any intention of becoming part of the forum "community".

I think it's good manners when doing this to acknowledge replies and engage in the conversation, but it doesn't surprise me that not everybody does this. But I expect these phantom thread-starters will come back and read what answers they've got, even if they don't engage any further.

Rude bastards
