head attire for chrome domes

Postby jules21 » Sun Nov 17, 2013 9:22 pm

all of you fellow chrome domes will understand the dilemma of covering your head on the bike, with more than just a helmet.

no coverage in summer and you get a BBQ grill sunburn, in winter you just get cold.

so i've been wearing a buff.

but the tail hangs out at the back. this has been bothering me for a while, but i haven't come up with any more stylish solutions so haven't done anything about it. sadly, today i was competing in my local crit when i heard a rider/spectator on the barriers make the distinctive AHARRR sound of a pirate as i rode past. i'm unsure if it was for me as there was a guy with a pirate-something jersey in the race, but i'm now feeling all self conscious about it.

do i keep it as my trademark? or is there a more pro option?

Slip into one of these as well and you're good to go.

If the buff was made of lycra, how could that possibly be taken for pirate-wear ? Lycra hadn't been invented back in those days.

FWIW, I favor the upper rightmost style - shades the neck a bit from the sun. In rain, it wicks the water to the outside of
rainjacket. And on hot days, sweat is wicked towards it and evaporated.

With benefits like that, you can easily afford to ignore and poorly educated sod who mistakes you for a pirate.

If all else fails, don't forget the sunscreen.

My head is similarly bare. ... I use a Halo bandana. Works brilliantly, keeps sweat out of my eyes when it's hot and adds a little warmth when it's cool. Does look a bit pirate-esque, but I'm weird enough not to care :-)

While I'm not a chrome dome yet I have a bald patch that has some hair I was getting burnt on. When the school was selling Bandannas for canteen we all got one.

It works well under the helmet (not leaving too much out the back) and supports a good cause - I think you can still get them in Big W during November. I got a nice black one but there are many nice colours.
Not fast, no style, but still get there.

Flip the tail back up over your head before you put your helmet on, Jules, then adjust your headband tension and chin strap length. Works for me.

This might seem a little weird - you could try wearing a cycling cap.

All very well if your head fits into the "all" category of "one size fits all" *mumble*grumble*

I use one of these for prolonged days riding under the sun; a Frill neck.

Actually very adjustable (scone circumference wise) and configurable like the buff scarf pictured earlier. You can can have less hanging at the back, with the various velcro straps attached. Not very euro-cool - but sod them. Our summer sun is different. OEM product site here.

Try this, which I occasionally use to give me a lightweight beany:

Have the sock inside out.

Put a short section of it over head-ears but only to a minimal length.

Now twist the longer length that is still free and above he head. Say, a half turn.

Then slide that free length over the head.ears.whatever in the normal way. Continue sliding it down to suit the coverage you want or how much (if any) of it that you want loose above te top of your head.
You are now wearing, essentially, a lightweigh beany.

Look up "Durag" on ebay. I got one from a mob in Moloolaba in Qld. They are great under a helmet. I am a chrome dome by the way.

Ah, the ubiquitous Arafat. Watch your camel Lawrence, I don't like the way it's batting it's eyelashes.

For a selection of stylish, quality caps in a range of sizes and fabrics you need to visit Waltz Caps. I have several cotton caps and a nice wool plaid number (nice for tweed rides). The only one I don't like much is the wicking version.

Bandanas for me. A couple of Uno and a halo. I never cycle with a bare head. I'm not bald but have a nightshift haircut. I like the bandanas to control the perspiration a bit.
