The Sydney-Melbourne Alpine 1200 is a 1200km Audax Australia Brevet. Riders must complete the ride in 90 hours, and must also meet the cutoff times for intermediate checkpoints along the way. The ride leaves Sydney on Sunday 17th Nov at 6am, with the first overnight checkpoint in Canberra 330km later. Riders will make their way through the Southern Highlands, with Mittagong, Marulan and Tarago as checkpoints before arriving in Lyneham for the Canberra checkpoint.
From Canberra the field heads south to Cooma then though Adaminaby, Cabramurra and finally to the overnight checkpoint at Laurel Hill 648km. This is a serious climbing day which 4 years ago on the last SM-1200 saw terrible weather and was probably responsible for a lot of the 50% DNF rate.
Day three heads to Victoria, via Jingellic, Lake Hume, 800km, Beechworth 854km, Whitfield and and overnight in Mansfield 993 km.
Day four makes it's way into Melbourne 1210km (for the Audax Vic Xmas party) via Yea, and Healesville (1139km).
Online tracking and status updates will be available on the Audax Australia website http://www.audax.org.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The registered field has 53 riders, with 13 internationals. 4 riders from Canberra, some repeat offenders
For the less ambitious amongst us there are two 200km brevet rides scheduled in November, which is the start of our riding year. (Awards are based on annual, 4 year and life-time).
G-Spotting
From Gundaroo to Grabben Gullen we make our way to the Green Grocer in Goulburn for lunch, then ride back via Gurrundah and Gunning.
Start: Sunday November 10, from Gundaroo 6:30 AM
Capital Country Criss-Cross
Criss cross the country to the north of Canberra, visiting a range of settlements and landmarks
Start: Saturday November 30, City 6:30 AM

If you'd like to know more about Audax hit the website or drop me a message. We have rides this year from 200km to 600km in the Canberra region, but run rides in every state. 2014 sees the first 1200km in Tasmania in what will be a hell of a ride (lots of hills) and the return of our Western Australian 1200km the Perth-Albany-Perth.
Cheers,
Russ.

Holy. Crap.
Probably doing the annual 3fidi 350 ride similar to G-Spotting, but that melbourne run is nuts.

mind is keen but I know the body is unable.
That is an impressive effort of a ride, even to just attempt and DNF.

I have a friend doing the SM1200. Day 2 was 318km and 5,000m of climbing from Canberra to Laurel Hill. That's one tough day in the saddle.
