Replacement for Shimano Altus C50 Front Derailleur

Postby Mulgabill » Mon Nov 25, 2013 5:14 pm

I have an old Apollo MTB converted to a touring bike which has served me very well for a few years touring through NSW, Vic & SA. I was having problems tuning the gears and discovered a crack in the front derailleur. I guess it is just fatigue after many off bitumen kms.
Can anyone point me to a suitable replacement for the existing mech which is Altus C50 3x7 spd bottom pull clamp-on to suit 29mm seat tube?? And before someone says it, no I am not going to replace the bike, I just want to replace the derailleur. :wink

The current Altus, Acera & Alivio front derailleurs will work fine (although the Alivio maybe a little less so, due to the slightly narrower cage for 9-sp. chain). They come with a 34.9mm clamp, and shims to step down to 31.8mm & 28.6mm, and are generally dual-pull, meaning they'll work with both top- and bottom-feed cables.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Great info Duck! I am presently looking at the Altus FD M311as a replacement. It appears to have the requirements. Any thoughts Duck???

Pretty reasonable budget derailleur.
