The Nod

Postby nezumi » Wed Nov 27, 2013 9:34 am

Coming from a motorcycling background, when I am out on the bike I I tend to nod at riders coming the other direction.

I get about a 30-50% response rate.

Do you nod to other riders?

If you do, do you keep it restricted to your "tribe" (fixie, road bike, MTB etc)?

The only time I don't give a little wave or nod or 'Morning!' is when they pass me when we're supposed to be racing...then I either shout at them or breathe hoarsely in their general direction. I care not what they ride...though I do try not to giggle at BSO's
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

I give a small wave. Most people acknowledge back. Including the triathlon-guy on the triathlon bike going at high speed in the other direction.

Occasionally if I'm going the same direction I'll have a quick chat if they are interested (or if they start the conversation) - but to be honest I prefer to avoid side-by-side riding.

I've had a few motorbike riders say hello at traffic lights. If they want to chat, I'm okay with that.

Nod and/or wave - dependent upon how knackered I am at the time.

Also a quick 'G'day how you going' when pulling up to others at lights, etc.

Some nods/waves are returned around the Melbourne Bayside area and all are returned when riding around home.

I general give a wave or nod - depends on how hard we are pushing.
Generally get a return acknowledgement from most

Nod/Smile/wave to all comers, except maybe going across the Harbour Bridge when its peak hour.
All two wheelers get the same treatment, regardless of 'tribe'.

Also give "G'dayhow'sitgoin" at traffic lights . . though, as per macca33, this depends on my ability to breathe at that particular moment

It really does depend on how many others are out on the road at the time and how hard I'm working. I used to try to acknowledge most, now I barely acknowledge any - there's just too many.

After posing the question, I had the humerous mental image of two bunches going in opposite directions, with the rider's heads bouncing up and down like bobble heads. :D

On my commute to work I nod/say hi to a couple guys I see most mornings and everyone else gets nothing.

On non-commute rides I general give people a small finger wave or nod and at traffic lights I'll have a quick conversion with them and then attempt to burn them.

Yep, and BTW, can anyone tell me what I should buy as my first road bike? I want the fastest one, and my budget is $150. :-D

first it was waving, now its nodding! what's next..... raising a eyebrow, or flaring a nostril :D

seriously, there are so many riders out there, esp on my commute which is against the traffic (riding out of the city in the morning and vice versa). actually, i don't pay much attention to passing riders, prob wouldn't even notice if they were chucking a brown-eye!

And yes, I at least nod but may give a raise of the right index finger if I feel it warranted. I nod or finger raise to all, even peds. Had an interesting chat with a runner going up a hill the other day.

Runner: hi, how are you?
Me: huhg hasnl wheeze.

I don't think she was doing it a tough as I was lol.

Oh goodie, a nodding thread.
Which glove first?

Sorry......

I nod to other riders and make an effort for those that are obviously giving riding 'a go' good on em! Or older riders.

Now what chain lube?

Smooth peanut butter in summer and Marmite in winter.
(It has to be Marmite because Vegemite is too valuable.)

Hmmmm - to be honest, it hadn't occurred to me to put peanut butter on my chain. And why marmite in winter? Would peanut butter freeze?

And shut up you lot in the peanut gallery. :)

Peanut butter is stickier and attracts more road grime.

Bought some of the aldi brand breaky spread the other day. I like it better than vegemite. Very similar flavour but the vegemite is noticeably saltier.

I've found that my chain receives perfectly adequate lubrication by the incidental spillage from a longneck of Cooper's Stout. Given my level of skill, pre-crash anaesthesia is an important part of my ride preparation.
