What are you replacing, and can I have them? (I really should fit a road brake rather than the BB7 MTB brake I have... aiming for a Spyre given that a HyRd probably won't meet the budget...)

I am replacing my Lyras. They are only about 500 km old. I have both black (unused) and silver (500 km used) sets.

Clearly this isn't something you've ever checked...

Its the riders responsibility to ensure their equipment is legal.

Most of mrgolf's racing is indeed not under the rules of CA (which usually adopts the UCI rules).

For races under AVCC rules it pretty much only has to look like a normal bike and (back towards topic) disc brakes are also allowed (although they are unlikely to be found on a 5.5kg bike).

BTW the I have heard of one instance of a cable operated TRP Spyre SLC where the carbon actuator arm cracked, leading to brake failure. Probably best not to go too weight weenie on brakes. (Except for carbon disc rotors perhaps 8) )

Cheers,

Cameron

Yeah, Vets seems pretty relaxed. But even when I race Open A, there is no scrutiny of bikes before races, so adopt they do, but enforce they don't. I am certain my friend could race his 'dale ultimate at 5.5kgs without any questions being asked. But I think it shows how outdated UCI regs are. There are a lot of bikes off the shelf which come in well below UCI limits. The fact that ballast is needed to make pro bikes legal seems a bit silly.

That said, aiming for a 6.5kg bike seems fairly reasonable. A bidon and computer/ cadence sensor/ power meter gets it near or near enough. At non-pro level, no one is going to argue about 100g difference. But 8-900g difference on a big climb will make a big difference.

Yeah, I wouldn't go carbon callipers. That seems too scary. But just about any light weight calliper could fail, really.

As for discs, I can't wait to see the tech bring the weight down over the next few years. I have cable discs on an alu cx bike. Once I no longer tow trailers, a carbon framed hydro disc bike is just what the doc ordered for commuting. The new Shimano stuff looks sharp, but the weight penalty will be reduced significantly in a short amount of time. Especially with CX legally using it.

Nah, all race bikes in the pro peloton should maintain the existing weight limit, but be required to fit (or be able to fit) a video camera and a telemetry system (power, heart rate, cadence, etc), a la the main motorsport categories. Would make for awesome TV.

Phew received my S700 hydro disk brakes + shifters in the mail today and they're not in the recalled batch. I could only get them in the wrong config though (front brake left hand instead of right) so I'll need to swap and bleed the brake lines but I was going to do that anyway. I'll take some photos and start a thread showing how to do that when I work it out.

Sweet! Looking forward to reading your opinion on them once you've got a few kms with them under you.

Adding a front disc to a road bike !! And Now Hydro!

Postby rheicel » Sun Nov 24, 2013 10:26 pm

The brakes are now 300km old.

Set up at the rear is straight forward. The tabs on the frame is aligned perfectly and no need to do any sort of minor mod to prevent the pad rubbing.

It took me longer to fit the front due to pad rubbing. Brakes did not come with mountings that allows you to slightly change the caliper angles. I compensate the angle alignment by grinding the caliper mounts where the bolts are seated.

Brakes do have more power than what you will need in a road bike. I weigh 65 kg most of the time and my bike with fully loaded pannier bags probably can weigh as much as 30-35kg.

Riding in the rain doesn't seem to affect the brake performace.

Lever feel is very good. It is paired with Cane Creek CR5. I am not using compressionless cable, and therefore, the rear seems to have more modulation but longer lever throw.

Here are some of the photos...ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

US pretty much all went discs this season... But then US teams are sponsored by manufacturers so no surprise.
When Nys goes to Trek in Jan will be interesting to see what he rides.

4,200+ km now. TRP HY/RD still works like new. Rear pads are now 80-90% consumed while front are about 60-70%.
I am now considering to change the outer cable to compressionless.
Will report again soon....

You've got to use your front brake a bit more.

To save me browsing back, how are they? Overall, are they worth the premium over cable and can they hold a candle to proper hydro (if you have experienced both)? I am seriously looking at these for my roadie disc CX replacement.

On Road use, I can only compare it to my previous Lyra.

Mechanical Tektro Lyra are good enough for Road Bike use. I used these Lyras as temporary brakes and can stop me well both on dry and wet condition.

Now, for the TRP HY/RD, the brakes are overkill for road use which is good. I ended up just using my Disc Road Bike as Road bike as supposed to planned CX bike, so I cannot comment on the CX use of HY/RD's. HY/Rd have less power compared to any of the MTB Hydraulic Brakes I have used before (Hayes, Avid and Shimano), though this can only be attributed to type of rotor or pads.

Downside of HY/RD = long lever throw. Hope it helps.
