David Clinger, the bloke with the facial tattoo did end up in jail, for reasons that are related to the tattoo - both were the result of him using cocaine. In 2009 he tested positive for testosterone and modafil & was given a 2 year ban. Looking to return to cycling at the need of that ban, he tested positive for clenbuterol & received a lifetime ban. A talented cyclist but a troubled soul.

Not just Caucasians. As I understand it the Maori arm tattoos (done originally with chisels, not needles! ) aren't tremendously sensitive culturally, but the face ones are different. Didn't stop Mike Tyson.

The guy I rode down the gong with goes on big bike tours all over the world. The guy he normally does these with has a chain tattoo and he has a new link put in every time he finishes a big tour. That's something I can get behind.

It's quite easy to explain. Read this quote from author Chuck Palahniuk:
“It's so hard to forget pain, but it's even harder to remember sweetness. We have no scar to show for happiness. We learn so little from peace.”

This is why people get these sorts of tattoos - they're scars of happiness. If I were talented enough to do tattoos, I'd call my studio Scars of Happiness.

I've tried for many years to get one of those, never had the luck.

I have four and each one was done for a reason and the pain was worth it.

The first I gave to my wife for our 35th wedding anniversary and it is her name in a stylised winged shield across my heart. The second is a dragon surrounding the Earth and was my choice for my 55th birthday. The third is the Vietnames Buddhist symbol for long life and happiness with a vine growing through it. I chose that one after a specialist confirmed I didn't have lung cancer and the fourth is a seven-headed cobra, protector of Buddha, chosen to commemorate my first visit to Cambodia because I was so taken with the Khmer people and their beliefs.

No cycling tattoos yet and that is because while I like and really enjoy cycling, it has not yet had a profound effect on me.

Yes, getting a tatt hurts like hell (my last one took 12 hours in two sittings) but pain is temporary and the unique art lasts for life.

Don't knock it until you have tried it.

Wow getting tattoos at 55+.

I have a half completed work. It was meant to be a 1/2 sleeve with a large dragon and the background work was oriental style with lots of colouring. I got the dragon completed (over 8 hours worth) but then moved away from the artist and never got around to finding a new one to complete it. Some how over 10 years has passed since and I feel that as someone about to hit 40 next year it is a bit past to get it finished.

The thing is I don't like it unfinished either. So have been thinking about removal.
