After two months of commuting 17-20kms each way, I went on a 100km gravel grind around Hurstbridge and Kinglake. Quite the shock to my system, fortunately I met two great guys on the way who helped me push through and complete (most) of the ride - I went off the track notes in a couple of sections to avoid the big dirt climb.

yeah, just keep pushing the kilometres up steadily. I never did that properly. Now I am. The legs are slowly getting used to the fact that they are going to have to put up with almost 60km about 5 or 6 days a week. Last week it was 4 days a week. This week, see what happens.phineas wrote:That's awesome.
Hopefully that will be me one day - I've not yet managed 40km!
It's easier if you are riding with friends - they are good encouragement.

I remember when I popped my 100 cherry.
I was on a Sunday ride and was told the group would split 35k in for a 70k trip. The rest of the crew would embark on a 120k round trip.
I missed the turn off.
I was not prepared.
I made it back in one piece, but the final 10ks were AGONISING. Given where we were, it was either ride with the group, by yourself or catch a train home.

Part of all the enjoyment is scheduling and planning the rides and gradually building on what I have done.
I look back to six months ago and am still blown away with the idea of what is possible and look forward to progressing.
A mate hooked me up to Strava a while back, so here's the link : http://www.strava.com/activities/93982947" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Every one tells me once you pass the "house" your nearly there. Errrr No your not.BillR wrote:About Willunga Hill, I remembered the house on the left and for some reason thought the top was near.

I raced up there this morning (I use the term loosely) and couldn't believe I hadn't passed the house after what seemed, and was, an age. I reckon they've moved it

Make sure it's just short of a nice steep hill.
When you get there, tell yourself, "I don't have to ride up the entire climb. "
Once at the top you'll realize you only have another 15 km's to the 50k turn around point and Pages Flat Road is such a lovely ride.
Before you know it (2 hours something later!!), you've done it again!
Did I mention, I can hardly move this morning.

Mt Billy at the 110 k mark had a lot more bends than I was expecting!!
(But the road is much quieter than the main drag between Victa and Adelaide.)
200 k doesn't seem that far away.

If its over a 150km ride I'll stop for around 20 mins (AT) a cafe, get a toastie or something light like that and do stretches and use there facilities.
As for lack of movement next day, 20 mins of stretching when I get off the bike and nice gentle recovery ride next day
I find it helps loosen those sore muscles up.
