X0 Type 2 vs X9 Type 2

Postby Squigs » Sun Nov 24, 2013 3:15 pm

Currently I have a Sram X0 2x10 drivetrain on my MTB. I am looking to switch to 1x10 to save a bit of weight and make the bike more simplistic. I am planning to purchase a Sram Type 2 Rear Derailleur and a Wolf Tooth front chainring.

My question is is there a difference in shifting performance between a Sram X0 type 2 and an X9 Type 2 derailleur or is it just weight?

The X9 is about $100 cheaper than the X0 and is only 15g heavier. Am I missing something here or is the X9 just alot better deal?

Rear Derailleurs have a habit of breaking (collecting sticks). Never buy one if you can't afford a replacement.

IMO the shifter has more to do with shift quality than the RD.

i had come to the decision that 15g was less critical to me than $100 and i have spec'd x9 on my current build, but i have no performance data to back up my position, sorry :D

Or the other option I have is sticking with the current rear derailleur which doesn't have a clutch mechanism, and then buying a chain guide and a MRP Bling Ring. This will then cost about the same price because the a new derailleur costs as much as a good cross country chain guide.

Lots of anecdotal evidence the Wide narrow chainring does a lot more than a clutched rear mech. Run your current RD until you have cause to change it.

XX1 will be out in a cheaper version soon surely... maybe worth the "weight" :P

I haven't used a wide/narrow ring but I have a clutched x9 and a non clutched x0, chainslap is a thing of the past with the type 2. It does wonders for retention compared to an non clutched mech.

In comparison the x0 has lighter weight parts (hollow bolts etc). I'd save the money and get an x7t2 or x9t2.

X0 has a ballraced upper pulley. Noticeably lower friction over the bushed unit.

Alternatively for thirty bucks you might be able to fit a pair of Rollerboys but check first ... x9 used to use a bushing with off center bolt holes with 9 speed, which sucked... Rollerboys not compatible.

X01 still needs a new rear freewheel - may not be available for your wheelset.

...and I can vouch for it. At least in terms of pure XC. But it does work even better (quieter) with a clutched derailleur.

But in terms of the original question, I'd pick an X9 RD - in fact I did. The other bike (dually XC) has a Zee.
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

I have X0 shifters with X0 FD, X9 cranks and X9 clutched RD. It seemed to me the best compromise of cost and performance. It all works great and was a little cheaper than a whole X0 set.

Shimano is apparently the only major wheel manufacturer to not offer the X-drive freewheel body required for XX1/X01 cassettes.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.
