Olympics TV Coverage

Postby cray- » Wed Aug 13, 2008 11:37 pm

Why the hell can't Channel 7 publish a decent schedule for the games? The SBS Schedule is perfect but I just had a quick look at Fridays lineup [first day of track cycling] and it looks like SBS won't be covering it! This means we'll have to tape the whole days worth of Channel 7 coverage in the hopes that they find time to squeeze it in somewhere between the endless repeats of the swimming medals, assorted fluff pieces and gimpy montage clips. GGGGGRRRRRR!

Australia is so bloody backwards at times. Each of the commercial stations already have the frequencies set aside for 3 SD and 1 HD channel each [at least that's how it's currently being used] but because of some kind of government bureaucracy, they aren't allowed to multicast! The olympics is the perfect oppertunity to make use of a technology that's already been in place for quite a few years now. So bloody frustrating...

...so while I'm in a ranting mood, Channel 7 need to get rid of Basil Freakin' ZemplARSE from the Basketball commentary, the guy doesn't have a clue.

OK that's all for now, everyone else feel free to vent.

Cray,

Dunno if this helps (or if it's reliable), or even how extensive Channel lets-chuck-another-add-in 7 coverage is as I watched the road stuff on SBS. (Seems every time I flick over to 7 it's some bloody add, not the actual olympics!)

Channel 7 schedule

Here in Tassie we get Southern Cross which is a bit of a mash of 7 & 10 so who knows what we'll get here.

as of 2007 they can broadcast HD content which is different to the main channel(analogue and sd) , but they wont start doing it until they can start making a profit out of it , which the last plan i heard involved a user pays system , both 7 and 10 were in favour of this idea nine knocked it on the head

2009 Multiple SD channels will be allowed which will mean that the hd channel will need to cease operation due to bandwidth allocation
Each network has about 20Mbs of spectrum bandwidth to broadcast, and a SD channel takes about 6Mbs and HD about 12Mbs and you've got your other EPG channels etc (1Mbs). plus add on analogue , at the moment they have multiple channels due to ghosting which is just faking it

anway that was way off topic

one of the reasons that channel 7 wont publish events is they want you to be watching it , ratings>sponsor dollars> so that you're not watching any other channel

Chops: nah I don't follow Aussie Rules at all....so not sure what to make of that comment.

Grog: Yeah I've seen that page, but it only shows when the actual events are taking place, converted to EST and doesn't really relate to when/if they will be shown on TV. It does help a BIT in that you don't need to start recording if the event hasn't even started yet....obviously.

biftek: Interesting about the 20mbs thing, I didn't realise the "ghosting" situation, I just assumed they had enough bandwidth to show all 4. Have been reading up a bit on the DTV Forums about it all, pretty disappointing all round really. Will be interesting to see how it all pans out in Aus over the next few years, but I'm not holding my breathe. Most people I know arrange their viewing around broadcasts from "other sources" about 80% of the time now anyway. It's only this kind of live stuff where we're stuck with the old ways. Hopefully by the next Olympics we'll have bandwidth and resources to live stream whatever we want without the youtube quality hit. [I might have to move out of Jandakot though, still stuck on ADSL1 out here in the sticks....eewww]

Oh and thanks Channel 7 for showing the footy for 3 hours tonight in Perth. Wasn't even a WA team playing. I think I saw 3-4 races on the track in the afternoon and thats it. Hopefully a few more this evening. Wish SBS got to sort all the cycling for us. They have been doing a pretty good job showing most of the team sports.

OK, another rant over. I'll avert my eyes back to the bigass box in front of the couch now.

They've been copping an absolute bath on their own site.

You'd think swimming was the only thing on.

Nothing is live.

Far too many promos.

Absoutely disgraceful.

Unfortunately we may look back favourably at the Seven-SBS free-to-air split. The London 2012 Olympics broadcast rights have gone to Channel Nine and Foxtel. So it'll be ads, ads, ads on free-to-air, and if you want to watch the other half of the Olympics you'll need pay TV.

Hopefully by then we'll have an online alternative where we can watch whatever we want live. The Oz has a good article on the situation: http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/st ... 06,00.html

I'd much prefer pay tv.

Chances are FTA will get all the Aussie stuff.

But at least you know you will actually be able to get 90% of the other sports with specialist channels on Fox.

C7 have their HD channel which they aren't using.

Perth had about 2 hours of recapped coverage between 10-12 last night and they didn;t show the cycling at all even though we were in a medal race. Instead they showed repeats of a bunch of stuff we've already seen as well as more montages.

This morning they just added a clip of it on one of their "updates" segments. And I just had a quick flick through the days coverage and I'm pretty sure they showed the Chinese weightlifter medal 3 times [including last night] and no cycling. Bah.....

Tonight we've just had the two Aussie Keirin heats and the points race is on at the moment. So hopefully they get their act together.

They aren't even doing the 100s live.

That's how bad it is.

It is the one thing you cannot afford to get wrong.

Just pure !! BAN ME NOW FOR SWEARING !!.

Well... we've just had ads, ads and more ads instead of playing the 100s live.

You want to tell me why they should not have the games taken off them?

I will gladly pay for Foxtel in 2012 if it means all their sport channels have live coverage of different events.
This Ch7 coverage has been the worst since Ch10's coverage of Seoul in 1988.
And getting rid of the Dream has to be one of the worst decisions in TV history!

As I said, "Unfortunately we may look back favourably at the Seven-SBS free-to-air split." I don't like it any more than you, but I think Nine will be just as rude to viewers as Seven, and putting the rest on Australia's rip-off monopoly pay TV network excludes many people. Foxtel's pricing is about as fair and balanced as Telstra's broadband pricing.

NBC in the US has a website where you can watch just about any event, and nobody is affected by download limits. In the UK, multiple digital TV channels are used to give viewers what they want to see. We have neither - everything is concentrated into single-channel television because our TV and our broadband are so weak.

Even our pay TV sucks. The US channel HBO has made and aired several drama series in the last few years that are considered among the best TV ever made (The Wire, Rome, Deadwood, Generation Kill, etc). The rest of the world has been raving about them. In Australia, the only way for many people to see those series is illegal downloads, import DVDs, or catch the occasional heavily edited, out-of-date episode played in the wrong order late at night on Nine.

Anyway, at least cycling is getting more coverage that I expected. Not enough, but it's on a lot.

Its free-to-air. If you tuned in at 21:55 to watch the final of the mens Kieran and tune in again at 22:55 to watch Anna Meares win the sprint; you'd be happy but advetisers wouldn't pay. For free-to-air to work advertisers need to know you're watching the ads. Thats the game and we all know it.

SBS is different though. It's not paying anything like 7 and it has demographics "loyal" to SBS. People watch ads on SBS because they feel they are supporting cultural diversity, not commercial interests.

Channel 7 took it upon themselves to not show live any of Anna Meares' semi final win.
She comes back from nearly being a quadriplegic in January to get at least silver, and the c*ckheads at Ch7 can't even give her live coverage :(

It makes me sick.

GOOD ONE CHANNEL 7!!

Well, it only gets worse.

I get home from work to see SBS showing the <67kg Taekwondo (sp) and 7 showing the beach volleyball, with a promise of Aust v China womans basketball highlights coming up.

30 minutes later, SBS start showing the basketball highlights while 7 starts showing the exact same taekwondo matches that SBS showed half an hour ago. Say What?

And last night on our way home from dinner, we were listening to Ray Hadley call the womans waterpolo (Aust v Hungary I think). Get home and race in to see the last of the penalty shootout only to find 7 are 20 minutes behind schedule.

Man, if I ever watch 7 again it'll be too soon.

Kev.
