Music while commuting (Bluetooth? Bone Conduction?)

I use O-Tus helmet speakers. They work pretty well although I changed helmet from Specialised to Netti and they are working better, I assume the geometry and positioning is better. This gives me the best of both worlds. I can listen to music all the time, although sometimes near drowned out by traffic. As I listen to radio, I cant hear the speaking when in heavy traffic but most of the time its pretty good. However as this is not in ear tech I am aware of the sounds extraneous to me. Surprisingly enough you need to be pretty close to me to hear the sound...A lot closer than the cyclist riding next to me.

Silly question: Have you tried riding with standard earbuds in?

I use the "handsfree" headset that came with my phone and find that I can still hear everything going on around me without any dramas.. I don't have it turned up stupidly loud, just loud enough to provide a bit of background music..

Unless you're using a decent pair of closed cans or good (read: exxy$$) noise cancelling headphones, you should still be able to hear whats going on around you without too much trouble if you have the volume at a sensible level.

Fair enough just wanted to clarify as people often seem to assume that earbuds block out a great deal of noise when in reality it usually isn't the case

Noise cancelling headphones would actually be far worse - what they are *supposed* to do is generate a negative signal of the outside noise, so that you don't hear what is going on around you.

I am currently just using the speaker on my phone, with the phone mounted on my stem cap. This works for the most part, but I feel like a jerk in the CBD sometimes, and I have to be careful what I choose to play.

I was going to write a review of these, but saw this thread so will just say, awesome, what I was looking for (wind noise reduction and headphone cord conduction noise) despite doubting them after ordering/paying online.

I had spent almost as much locally on a couple of pairs of headphones that wrapped around ear and claimed fancy features that ended up being more complicated and poorer than my simple $5 silicon bud canal earphones.

Since I was a bit doubtful, I tried to order the cheaper 4GB Aus ones first from Videopro. That failed, I had confirmed stock at order, but by the time of dispatching there was none. Another month wait for Sony Australia, plus longer to get to the retailer then me, so I got a refund.
I went to the 8GB (NWZ-W274) international version closer to retail price, bonus storing more for variety of shuffling.
I was so happy with that one after it arrived and used for a bit, I ordered a second 4GB domestic set from VideoPro in a different colour for working around home, which I've found great to have hands free and be cord free with hammers and drills and garden equipment, and not having to bother with speakers.
Similar deal for the shower, I might only hear one song, but sometimes it's nice to zone out to a nicer song louder if you've already cycled for an hour and had enough thinking time, but don't really appreciate all the volume and instruments for safety aspect.

Importantly it doesn't foul on my sunglasses or helmet straps.

Like my waterproof/shockproof digital camera opening up a new convenient world of leisure photography without the equipment being central focus, this does the job simply and conveniently like my polarised sunnies, a pleasure to use, and would order more.

Those sony things look pretty cool...I see they claim they are okay for use whilst swimming. Do you think they are loud enough to hear if you were completing lengths of free style?

I would guess so judging by the gusty wind noise and volume ability, it goes louder than what I find comfortable beyond drowning out noise, but I haven't used the swimming buds personally. The 274 claims to have better swimming buds that seal water out that further muffles the volume, so it seems it was an issue with the 273 and improved on the 274, so if I was swimming I'd go for those. I used ebay for a HK source of the 274, Videopro locally for the 273.
