Some what embarrassing error
Postby tuco » Tue Mar 06, 2007 11:17 am
I finally had a day off (well most of it) yesterday. I took my daughter's bike to the lbs to get a mountain bike cassette put on it. I think you all know the story, yes you remember, the 6 metre roll out and only a double chain ring.
Anyway, they took one look at it and said, "That's not a 650."
Turns out all this time we've thought it was a 650.
The bike mechanic we bought it off said it was a 650, the cycling coach took one look at it and said, "That's a 650."
I've never had to buy a tyre or tube for it so never noticed or had any reason to check.
It does look a smaller bike so I lined it up with mine and the only differences are the top bar is a little shorter, the sticky up bit the handle bars go on is a little lower, the handle bars are narrower and the colour.
It's one hell of an optical illusion to fool a bike mechanic and a qualified cycling coach.
It also explains why I had so much trouble with those gear calculating programs.
The good news is the lbs sorted out the bike and for $50 she will now find it easier to get up hills and just in time, we've got a circuit with a nasty hill in it this weekend.
Old and new roll outs listed below. I still have the option of adding a 38T chain ring to get the in between distances. I'll see how she goes with the current arrangement first.
OLD ROLLOUT
Rollout (meters)
Chainring teeth - 39
Cogs
12 - 6.89
13 - 6.36
14 - 5.91
15 - 5.51
16 - 5.17
18 - 4.59
21 - 3.94
24 - 3.45
NEW ROLLOUT
Rollout (meters)
Chainring teeth - 39
Cogs
12 - 6.89
14 - 5.91
16 - 5.17
18 - 4.59
21 - 3.94
24 - 3.45
28 - 2.95
32 - 2.58

I hate to ask the question, what gearing did she use in the race?
If the R-1 rule is broken, what happens to N+1?

It was a flat circuit, square layout and very fast corners.
Most of the kids forget they have gears so I bet most stayed in the one gear.
Is there a reason you ask? I'm always open to suggestions and I still have the original cassette so can swap and change a few of the gears.

I'm going to ride to work tomorrow and take a photo of my bike and prove once and for all that it's red, Avanti burnt red, even if I have to use photoshopLuckyPierre wrote:Because your daughter knows a hot pink bike when she sees one!tuco wrote: ... the only differences are the top bar is a little shorter, the sticky up bit the handle bars go on is a little lower, the handle bars are narrower and the colour ...

What? You didn't notice the wheels were the same 700 size as your bike? Didn't you put them side by side and compare them at home?tuco wrote:700 and ladies frame and light blue not burnt red.sogood wrote:Ok, Tuco, please stop the suspense! If it's not 650, so what was it?

Due to space issues they're not stored together.
It's an illusion I tell you. I wasn't the only one fooled.
Half the problem may have been my big bulky body and her smaller body added to the illusion plus her seat and handle cars are lower.

Sure was. I rolled out the bike and measured the distance two weeks ago.mikesbytes wrote:She was compliant with the rules when she raced then.tuco wrote:The old one.mikesbytes wrote:I hate to ask the question, what gearing did she use in the race?

I measured it at 5.9m which matches the table above.

Well, then I'll have to congratulate you! You now have a spare set of wheels for your bike, or should I say that your daughter has a spare set of wheels?tuco wrote:Believe it or not no, well not until yesterday anyway.
