Hello,
I have a edge 500 and I have recently downloaded the android strava app but I am unsure on the steps required to get my Garmin Edge 500 to connect to the Strava App.
Do I need to enable something on the edge or the app or phone
Help appreciated

Hi have you turned on Bluetooth on the Edge and then paired it with your phone? I don't have a smart phone to pair my edge 810 to, but I think you have to pair up.

Correct on both counts - USB to your PC only for uploading from the EDGE 500.

Use the edge to upload to Strava.com using your login, through a computer. You will then be able to see your rides on the app. You can't upload directly from the edge to the phone.

If you have a usb OTG adaptor and your phone/tablet can mount usb drives (might need to be rooted), you can mount the internal drive (but not the memory card on an 800 - you need a usb/microsd adapter for this) as a usb stick and then upload via the strava website. The app cannot upload external files, only what it records.
