Best tyres for commuting?

got in trouble last week after my rear tyre looked like this:



6400+kms, 1 puncture. new one now installed.

I am still going strong at 22,000km!

To be honest, I can't figure out why this tyre is still going and not even showing blue specks yet. I'd normally be trashing them around the 12,000km mark.

I have four new SMPs ready to go so I am not trying to hold out. My replacement Marathon Supreme is still in one piece (front tyre), having done double the previous tyre's distance without incident (1,800km).

What size is your tyre? Jason's looks pretty narrow given the rim it's on.
My 25c is not wearing as well as I expected.

I run 28mm tyres on my commuter.

I've got 25c also.Given they aren't exceptional for wear IME and are super heavy and a dead feel, I'm going to try randonneurs next.

That is awesome mileage, I'm not getting anywhere near that on my 25c's

Wider tyres wear better than narrower ones.

Edit: I see further up you are looking at a greenguard, have you tried them before?

I think jason is dismissing a decent (notice I didn't say great) tyre, you might want to delve a little deeper than one person's opinion. I rated my rando's, not one pucture in 2 years, still had tonnes of tread, and they weren't as squirrly as gatorskins. But do some research and see what others have to say.

They are a different class of tyre, but they look reasonably tough . I'm pretty ambivalent toward the SMP, good puncture resistance true, but that comes at the expense of a dead feel (Nobody did warn me of that, and don't tell him, but he was right again). The wear rate has been unimpressive for a tyre with such a shed load of weight and material in it.

I do think it's worth discussing. It's awesome that you've collected data on your tyre milage, but remember that data is specific to you, your weight, the way you ride, where you ride, how often, when you ride, how far, etc. So thanks for offering your specific data to us, but it is by no means definitive. What if the user wants a light tyre? SMP are hardly light. What if they want a slick tyre, SMP's aren't slick. What if they want it in 23c? SMP don't come in that. So very quickly the parameters can make all your data irrelevant. The conversation continues...

The tread is only decorative. The SMPs grip just as well without the tread as they do with it. My rear one lost the tread about 5000km ago, still fine at 22,000km+ (started life as my front tyre).
I get around 12,000km usually, but since August last year the M2 westbound reopened and I reckons my tyre wear has reduced as a result.

I get more out of a GP4000s also. No locking. They are just crap.

I had a notable difference from Kenda to Randonneur in rolling resistance.

As I have two hours of study to do before anything else when getting home, a couple of minutes means less 'me' time at the end of the day.

Needless to say, two Randonneurs sitting in the garage unused.

Moan Moan - most of the other commuters on this forum seem to prefer the marathon plus option.

Whilst it seems to be the king of mileage per tyre - its not the fastest, which is my preference.

Currently commuting on Schwabe Luganos. Budget tyre, does the job..... much less rolling resistance = faster. Trialing Mr Tuffys tyre liners as had too many punchers due to douchbags Saturday night broken bottles on the bike trail.

Maxxis Refuse are available in a very fat looking 25mm. I'll be getting a set of those when my current 23s wear out.

its not the fastest, which is my preference.

a commuting tyre is a compromise.

My choice is to get to work. Hence if it takes me an extra few minutes to get there, that's a few minutes less than fixing a puncture (which normally occur in the pleasant rain). It also means I get decent tyre wear. I get a good workout too.

My roadie runs road tyres. When I ride that bike, I can accept a puncture or two (had 9 punctures on the roadie last year vs 1 on the marathon plus)

I don't know how many k's exactly my rear SMP in 25c has done. 2-3 k max. Tread is half worn. Maybe they'll go longer than I think.

Vittoria Randonneur 700 x 28 with reflective bead wear well and have few punctures. When they are badly worn they don't corner very well. Tyre pressure makes a big difference with these tyres. If anyone knows where I can get a replacement set please let me know.
