Sram 11 speed 11-28 cluster with 6870 DI2??

Postby mtbboy41 » Mon Mar 10, 2014 9:01 pm

Hi all, Is anyone using a sram 11 speed cluster with Ultegra DI2. I am convinced that the squeaking coming from my bike when I am out of the saddle is coming from the ultegra cluster with its carbon cog carrier. I am sick of greasing the carrier interface every couple of rides. I have found plenty of posts referring to even more catastrophic problems wit the dura ace 1 speed clusters and some people suggested trying a Sram cluster. Anyone got it working and would like to comment? If you have I would also be interested in what chain you are using.
Thanks in Advance
Jock

Does the noise only happen when you are in the gears that are on the carbon carrier?
If that is the case, then that is more that likely your problem.
But it could also be pedals, cleats, crank, b/b, rear hub, skewers, headset etc

Are you 100% positive it is coming from the cluster? When you re-greased the freehub, did the problem completely go away?

It could be a number of things:

A lot of the time creaks (when out of the saddle) come from the seatpost bolts. You could try removing your seatpost altogether and go for a spin up the road.
Spoke nipples can also do this. Do you have another rear wheel you can try? I found this out the hard way.
Rear skewer could be it doing it to. Do you have another QR skewer you could try?
Lastly bottom bracket, although from personal experience I find that more often than not the squeak isn't coming from the bottom bracket.

Hub end caps can get frightfully squeaky at times, especially rubbery ones. Also, many headsets have a rubber water barrier under the main top bearing cap, and this too can get very squeaky.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Thanks for the rapid responses so far. I have been checking off all the regular suspects , QR, clean dropouts greased seat post mast and clamp, head bearings carbon head spacers.
When i grease the cluster the bike is silent for a while then the squeak comes back either on the cogs on the carbon carrier or on the cogs either side when I am out of the saddle. I don't have any other wheels to swap out so can't go that far yet.
Still interested to hear of anyone using an 11 speed sram cassette with di2 :)

Did you grease the free-hub at all before installing the cassette? Or only grease the cluster? I've never greased a free-hub and don't believe you ever should.

But it does sound like it is coming from the cassette. Creaks are so annoying!

Yes it will work, so will a campy 11 speed cassette, if you had a campy wheel.

I get the same squeak or creak. I think it is coming from the bottom bracket or pedals. Thinking I just coat everything in grease
