Bit more CCR action this morning along the river from the Casino to the Narrows- following (not wheelsucking) a guy on a Cervelo (me on commuter TCX) through the usual traffic until the path separates from the footpath and becomes a cycleway (theoretically). Overtook Mr C and found him wheelsucking. Traffic was very light and lots of good sightlines so hit it and found he couldn't hang on- unfortunuatelty hit lots of traffic further up so backed off and he caught me then did risky overtake of a car doing the right thing waiting behind a cyclist.

Also noted not much traffic coming from south along the Kwinana PSP- too much head/crosswind for those SOR sooks?

Finally some CCR action this week, riding home Friday afternoon 36km in to 41km trip which was a slog into the crosswind.

Teenager on BMX spots me and starts hammering down the hill ahead, then onto the footpath. I give it a little stick and chase, he is spinning like a madmen. I catch him at the roundabout, just as he leaves the kerb doing at close to 40kph and gets decent air. I pass him before he lands, now I am spinning at 120rpm and pulling away.

We both only have one gear but mine is 86 gear inches and he is gone before the climb.

had a funny, but brief CCR encounter this evening. crossing the walmer st bridge, heading up walmer st, i overtook what i presumed was a sedate commuter on a flat-bar and wearing a business shirt. as we hit the walmer st climb, i started winding up for the first of my interval sessions. out of the corner of my eye, i noticed my friend also taking a run up - apparently to teach me a lesson for overtaking him a moment ago. it would have worked, except that i coincidentally had the same idea. seeya buddy :)

I'll claim +5 from this morning. Points count as I ride in baggies and with a backpack.

Spotted some riders up in front of me, noticed the last was an upright ie hybrid or MTB and didn't think much more of it as they are usually no competition. As I got closer, there was a group of four roadies pushing along nicely. Couldn't help myself so accelerated and caught them. Even with some minor slowing for sharepath traffic. Passed them after waiting a bit for a clear run and then spotted another rider, again expecting a morning cruiser. Ended up he was another kitted roadie so I 'had to' keep up the pace and soon caught him, but didn't pass as I was waiting to see if he would turn off with me. Still claiming a victory even though I turned off first as I know I would have smoked him :)

Last 2 years I have not seen another cyclist on my run to work, today was different.

+1 for me for a total of 1 point! YEAH

This morning was Fixie Friday. I saw three matching lit roadies come out of a roundabout ahead, think they'd just left a coffee break as another similar kitted rider was headed in the other direction from a similar point. Anyway they looked like they were going to take off so I thought I'd catch on the back before peeling off to the sharepath. Gave the pedals a bit of a push and was surprised the momentum from the fixie caught the back marker. Kept the cadence going and caught the second and then the lead rider - effortless (faked) good morning to each, kept my pace and got away in front. Peeld off to the share path and slowed a bit, but then picked it up again. Fully expected to see their train pass by on the road but didn't. Was pleasantly surprised to see the three pass outside the gates at work after I'd stopped to get through the boom gate, cruised through the depot, parked, jumped off and locked the bike.

CCR+3 and Happy Friday.

Good CCR action this morning- a fast train of 8-9 roadies with most sharing the load. Also no silly/dangerous overtakes and some good handsignals happening. By the time it all disintegrated at Leederville we were down to four riders with me having to twice bridge gaps to guys who had moved off ahead due to slower traffic. One was a full on burn from Hutton Street to near Lake Monger- hitting the redline the whole way- talk about pain- but was happy I could hold it there and maintain good pace.

In the end was a draw (IMHO)- no one could get away off the front.

Somewhat mixed CCR action this morning. Saw 2 potential targets ride by on the PSP while I was waiting at a railway crossing to get onto the PSP, first a cyclist on a white roadie and then 10-15 seconds later a flatbar which had what I thought was a small commuting bag on the back but am now hoping was a battery for an e-bike as the flatbar overtook the roadie up a moderate rise and disappeared into the distance with what seemed to be a suspicious lack of effort.

I caught up to the roadie and overtook them for a +1 to me.

Continued along and had another roadie turn onto the Rutland St bike route at Archer St just past Carlisle railway station where I was stopped at the stop sign. Chased the roadie past Vic Park Station and into Burswood, along Goodwood Parade and down the GFF PSP (allowing plenty of space and keeping to a reasonable speed on the steep descent) finally caught up to them going up the hill at Belmont Races. Stayed behind them across Windan bridge and made an overtake on the climb past the old power station up to the East Parade underpass. Kept a reasonable speed along the PSP into East Perth but the roadie got on my wheel with no trouble and I was tiring. Pulled off at Claisebrook Rd for the hill climb into work just before he gobbled me back up. Technical +1 but should be a 0 as he would have easily had me if I wasn't turning off.

Riding home the other night, thought I'd give the old Shogun a ride around the lake and was averaging around 27km/hr. This lady on a more modern bike came flying up behind me and must've thought it looked bad to ride behind a guy on a 27" steel framer with steel wheels, and wearing a backpack and blundstone boots (or she was trying to avoid negative points for a commuter challenge). Anyway, I follow the bike path as it shortcuts the roundabout and I slow to allow her to go through as she took the roundabout option. I sit well back from her and within a kilometer she slows right down, couldn't pass because of traffic so at the next roundabout / bike path option,I give it a squirt. Start booking it at 32km/hr to try and get a race going on (I'll have a crack at anyone cause at minimum it gives someone a small workout or an incentive to go for that strava time  ) and she just falls off... I was quite disappointed.... but why slow in front of someone if you don't want a race?? :? So I continued the last half of the lap at just over 30km/hr and then turned off and headed home.

Few weeks before that I tried it with a guy on a nice shiny Trek, he knew what was going on and I had to laugh and wish him a nice ride when I fell off the back

Got passed at mid-cruise by a very fit looking lady on a fancy-ish flat bar this morning – most visibly-fit people on flat bars will beat me, and in any case I let most things slide in the mornings (so that when I get to work I have a bit left in the tank to hold my coffee mug upright). But as she drew past near Pagoda restaurant, I clocked that she had a rear basket with a handbag in it, and something about that visual made my brain twang and refuse to let it go unchallenged.

So I smartened my act up and caught up to her a bit past Canning Bridge, then had a nice clear chance to overtake, so I took it. She started chasing me immediately. Thought I had enough of a margin at Mt Henry for a quick drinks break with my foot off the gas, but she started breathing down my neck again. Opened up a nice bit of distance again as I got to my turnoff through Bullcreek, so at that point I declared the CCR stage over and myself the winner.

But lo, as I popped out onto the corner near campus, up she rolled again, GAH!! We both had a chuckle at that – turns out she is a colleague. She played a bit faster and looser with the crossing lights than I would with an audience, and ended up getting her front wheel onto campus before me. Is there such a thing as a ‘moral victory’? Or a tie at least??

Moral victory. No road rule breaking allowed for a true CCR win, IMO. :D

Potentially a financial victory too.

Turnoff was a good 5km after I overtook - and I go that way anyway I swear  (She came back at me from another route).

I was grinding away up a fairly steep ramp onto a bypass road, and some really old (looking) bloke on a hybrid just cruises past as effortless as you like. WT? Then I observe that there was a battery on the rack and what appeared to be an electric hub on the front wheel. He continued to sail up the hill and there was no hope of catching him on that stretch. Thought that if he was going the same way as me, I should see him again a couple of km's down the road where it flattens out, and quite unprotected by the strong headwind that was blowing. And sure enough.... made it stick on the subsequent hills too!

But wait, there's more... Although probably belongs in the dumb cyclists and pedestrians thread.

About 8 kms later, I'd come off a path and was waiting to cross and rejoin a road to negotiate a roundabout and hit the final leg for home. The old bloke comes salmoning up the road I'm trying to cross, and proceeds to navigate the same roundabout, hugging the inside kerb, against the flow of traffic. Only a still for this bit, as a) the camera only just caught a frame or two on the very right hand side of the picture, and b) my language addressing his lack of safety awareness is not in the best interest of younger listeners.

Tuesday night riding home after a solid morning effort due to having family duties for the rest of the week (Tapering for 3 Dams? ) a solid stream fast roadies accumulated at Karrinyup Road heading north. Got held up by a couple of slower riders so screamed off after 3 guys, found the best I could do was slowly catch them then maintain their pace about 150-200m off their tail- so major lose for me, but legs just weren't there.

Does anyone else view Swanston St as a cyclist drag strip? Northbound in the morning it hits every light. There are even varied drag strips, slight downhill, flat and slight uphill. On a normal morning you'd get at least 3 drag runs - flinders St, Colin/Little Colins St. Bourke/Little bourke.

Spotted up ahead a challenge this arvo. Seemed to be moving pretty well so I pedalled up and out of cruise mode. Took a bit to get him in the sights and when it got close enough saw that he was on a very upright flat bar bike and got a bit disappointed as there weren't points to be had. The closer I got I realised he was moving at a fair clip with what looked like very little effort, spurred me on and now I can claim an e-bike scalp. He did get me back, but he cheated using a signalled ped crossing while I was attempting to track stand for the lights to go green and then continued on while I turned off. Still claiming the win though. :)

had an attempted CCR tonight. seen this bloke before - he's on a roadie and was ahead of me about 50m. so we're going up this hill and I just stay steady. the bloke behind him takes off in front of me. I'm not far behind that guy. said roadie guy sees me and tries to go with me but gives up after about 50m. me on the flatbar = win!

Looking for a rule clarification here if possible.

Was riding home last night when both my main front light and then my spare both started to die. Speed came right down to low 20s so I had some chance of seeing where I was going. Got passed by 4 or 5 people of various CCR standing before I crawled home in the mid teens.

My question is, can I nullify these negative ccr points as my speed was due to an outside factor?

so YOU failed to charge your lights or did the ccr points scorers flatten them for you?

While possible that they stole into the work bike cage to flatten my lights in preparation for ccr point gain it's pretty unlikely.

I'd say points safely nullified. Riding safely trumps CCR events. Assuming you weren't going your hardest you will get no negative points. On the flip side though if you pass anyone up the ladder you get the points so anyone who was racing you has the opportunity to claim points (although I don't think I'd be taking them in that situation).

I thought the essence of CCR is that the other rider doesn't know you are racing.
