Claud Jubilee - 1954 (sort of)

Postby WyvernRH » Sun Mar 24, 2013 6:09 pm

This is one I have just finished but didn't dare bring to a 'Concours' meet...
I bought this frame off Karen several years ago. It is solid but the chrome needed attention, either re-chorme or paint over (which needs a decent painter!) and the brain went into vacillate mode.. So it hung on the wall until I got a blue anodized Burlite brake off eBay (a forum member if IRRC) and I snapped! I really wanted to ride this biKe! Inspired by a 1950's Freddie Grubb that an old clubmate had back in London with all 1950's blue anodized parts (Airlites etc) I decided to do a BLUE bike and go for 'patina' on the frame!
The chrome was neutralized and polished and as many period parts used as possible, but preferably blue. Modern parts that looked period were used if the 'real stuff' wasn't available. Decals were planned and positioned to hide the worst defects in the chrome. While I'm pretty sure no Jubilee ever left the Clapham works looking exactly like this I reckon there were a few that were damn close  The Burlite levers hoops would only fit the diameter of steel bars so that fixed the bar choice,,,,
Fit out ended up as:
Stem: GB
Bars: geneic steel randonneur
Brakes: Burlite
Chainset: Magistroni steel with Campag alloy 3-arm rings 50/40
Pedals: Wellgo track with Welgo bluee clips
Wheels: Unknown blue 32 hole hubs with velocity rims
Gears : Cyclo push/Pull top action at front, Zeus Alfa Huret copy acrosss a 14-22 Atom at the back, Simplex levers

What do you think, OK or a bit 'flash' :) It rides really well!

Well I like what you've done with it. Are you planning to gradually replace the non-period parts as appropriate ones become available?

Yes, that's the idea. Might be a long wait tho, I might be lucky enough to score a pair of blue Airlite hubs sometime but I feel the chances of me finding the ultra rare blue anodized Holdsworty or Lyotard pedals is highly unlikely, let alone another blue Burlite brake. Likelihood of picking up a blue dyed Brooks as seen (according to 'Cycling' magazine) at the 1952 Earls Court bicycle show is basically zero..
Most other bits are period or very close to.

Hi Richard
That looks great, I have a soft spot for that blue anodizing.
There is on ebay at the moment a pair of brake anodized blue levers GB brand which may be of interest. (item# 121085883271)
Never say never on those seeking parts, they will turn up.

A bit of a catch up... Much to my surprise I am now the proud owner of a BLUE Brooks B17! Courtesy of Pushys Bicycle Supplies up in Queensland.
Never thought I'd get one of these at a sensible price (did you see the scandalous price they were asking for the Olympic specials  !)
For those interested Pushys also had red, lime green, white and yellow versions

So, another period part added, the search continues!

Ooooh yes! :o Well spotted!
However, I have a sad suspicion that a pair of Coloral bottles in such good nick are going to end up way above my budget... :(

Er no... I bottled (no pun intended) circa $200.00 which was way more than I really wanted to pay but I was subbed by SWMBO - someone out there really wanted them!

I really like the front derailleur arrangement, but i'm curious as to why? Is it a period thing or did you only have 2 single boss clamp ons and no double boss clamp?

That's correct, it's a retro thing.
If you look closely you can see that the activator chain exits the right side of the Cyclo front changer (ie directly above the cage) so you cannot pull from below, you must pull from above and on the right of the tube so you cant use a down tube lever to activate it (without a big fiddle)
I prefer the front changer lever on the seat tube with an open direct pull cable but some people used to use a bar-end lever or a lever on the top tube using a cable with an outer along the top tube and down to the cable stop above the derailleur.

OK they are not blue but here is a photo of the Claud with Coloral bottles fitted. I was given these years ago by a friend who had actually used them racing and they have the dings and scratches to prove it! They came with no attachment fittings so I had to make some up. The bottles, even after much work are not really fit to drink from so I will have to have a 'real' bottle in the back pocket when I ride this Claud from now on.

Well, whatever Greg had in there last was never washed out. Whatever it was (no names, no pack drill) 40 years later has encrusted itself firmly to the internal aluminum and defies removal. I have tried most things short of strong acids to shift it but no.... So, probably harmless but I'm not going to risk it. The fact that whatever spilled managed to remove the lacquer on the outside alloy is sufficient for me...
