We'll be cycling northern India starting early July.
Anybody else going our way?
Plan is to cycle to Leh, via Srinigar, then south via Spiti valley to Shimla.
We've been to Leh and Spiti before but are looking forward to Srinigar
Going to India, anyone?

I possibly might be going in late may for 10 weeks which might see me in the vicinity during the last week or two.
My plan was to head up towards gangotri/yamunotri which may see me with a bit of spare time to do the more western side of things.
Its all really sketchy at the moment since I may or may not be able to pay the bills in my absence for such a long stretch.
Last time I was in Delhi I met up with a warmshowers local who has done leh/manali twice. In his opinion the best time to do that trip is September since you are outside the main monsoon bracket and traffic has eased off a bit (since it attracts a bit of congestion during its opening after the winter).

Like you we've cycled a bit in northern India: Manali to Leh, Spiti Valley, Shimla to Dharamsala. We have also been thinking of starting in Srinagar, then going to Leh and possibly cutting off before Manali to ride across to Dharamsala .... but we have no fixed plans yet. Have you worked out how you'll get to your starting point? We'd be interested to hear a bit more about your plans.

Looking at taking the airporter to Chandigarh http://airportchandigarh.com/transport/ ... -schedules" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ,then start riding from there. We'll just take our boxed bikes from the airporrt to the bus and build up on arrival
There is an alternate road to Doda in Srinigar province we'll be taking from Chamba, and then on to Leh.
Then back to Delhi or Shimla via Spiti valley. A beautiful ride we've done before

Have you heard about the floods up there in June 2013. Just google if you haven't.
Even a year later, I don't think it would be a good idea to go there.
Kedenath was always in my mind as a magic moment, and always planned to return there, but looking at the photo of it post flood, I personally would leave it for 5 years.

generally in india its rare for the big floods to come one year after another ... although how much climate change has stuffed up this conventional wisdom, who knows .... but at this stage it all seems academic since I might have to postpone it to another time (unless my bank a/c gets a flood of money )alfine8 wrote:Hi Cheesewheel,Cheesewheel wrote:I possibly might be going in late may for 10 weeks which might see me in the vicinity during the last week or two.

Yeah true, but I was more worried about everything getting back to normal.
The Chardham Yatra is getting more and more popular with Indian pilgrams every year, so finding accomadation could be a problem if all the services haven't been restored.
I am only guessing, so could be way off the mark.
