Hi,
I find that I am breaking the fingers on the 11mm inserts, which fit in the ortleib hooks, about every 3000km.
I am really getting tired off having to buy a pair of 8mm inserts, that come in the spares kit with the pair of 11mm inserts.
I've ended up with 15 of the 8mm inserts that I will never use. I tried drilling one out to 11mm, but that didn't work.
Does anyone still use racks with 8mm tubing, that might want to swap any spare 11mm inserts they have.

Buy 1M of clear aquarium tubing (10mm ID, 13mm OD) - about $3.00. Slit it lengthways and fit sections of it to the rack bars. Fasten with cable-ties.

Thanks for the tip il padrone,
Never thought about that.
Have you been using that system for long, and has it had any affect on the ortleib hook and locking latch.

I've been using it for about 4-5 months. Works pretty well. I do need to be a bit more careful that the hook latches have flipped down correctly. A couple of times with my front panniers the hooks have pushed a cable-tie off, but they do not hold the tubing on, only secure it from being pushed off. Overall it has been a very successful strategy.

OK, I'll give that a try and get back to you on how it goes.
Do you think that solid plastic electric condute or water pipe would work better.
Maybe to give a more positive closing agent for the hook latch.
Just so you are more confident that it has closed, if you forget to check.

I just wound two (long) strips of duct tape around where the hooks go. Not as neat as IP's solution but it's worked pretty well for 9 years. I guess the main flaw is having to redo it if you wanted to reposition the hooks.

Don't know, I am not familiar with this tubing. I reckon it needs to be flexible to fit it on the rack bars, and it needs to be able to be cut easily. I first bought some reinforced fuel-line tubing - it was too tough, I was not able to cut it nor slit it with the knives I had available. The aquarium tubing is very tough against abrasion, and doesn't cause any problems with the latches, but can easily be cut with a Stanley knife or even a sharp Swiss Army knife.alfine8 wrote:Do you think that solid plastic electric condute or water pipe would work better.

Get it from Clark Rubber.
