Ipswich 100 Charity Ride 2014

So is anyone doing this this year? I'm hooking up with a mate and some others but only doing the 50klm ride.

I'm doing the long ride. I've always found the standard of riders generally good at the Ipswich 100 (compared to say the Bris-GC and certain other participation events), but admittedly I've always done the longer versions. I guess with the shorter route you will get people new to cycling, but Foo should be able to keep his wits about him and even offer some friendly advice to people who are learning. Events like this can be a great stepping stone for people who are new to cycling. The first time I did the Bris-GC it was genuinely an unknown for me, on flat peddles in shorts and t-shirt — just before the Dreamworld stretch a guy rode up beside me who clearly was capable of being already at the GC and half way back to Brisbane by that time, but he'd chosen to ride along with the newbies offering encouragement and tips (positioning, cadence, equipment, whatever), with not a hint of condescension, just pure encouragement and sharing his love of riding. I've always appreciated his kindness, I learned a lot in the 10 - 15 mins or so he rode with me.

The volunteers are always great at the Ipswich 100, and a very high proportion of the entry fees actually goes to charity, so it's an event I always look forward to.

The 50 km route is pretty flat and hopefully you'll dodge the worst of the wind and heat that can make the longer routes interesting. The car traffic is generally pretty well behaved once you get away from Ipswich itself. Have fun on the day!

I did the Ipswich 50 last year. It was my first ever charity/large group ride. I also went on to do the Brissie to Bay 50 and the B2GC. Of those three, I felt safest on the Ipswich ride. Just not as busy and riders quite spread out. I'm away at that time this year or would have done it again (or maybe tried the 100).

This is the most dangerous time, when everybody tries to get to the front.

Last time we entered my wife only got 50m before some d^^khead knocked her down, and we spent the next couple of hours at the hospital getting her finger pad stitched back on.

The year before, another gumbie who wasn't paying proper attention knocked her down from behind - she was concussed and the blow caused a detached retina and the total loss of vision in one eye.

So nope, never doing it again.

I'm not talking about getting to the front, i'm talking about being up in the front group. Where you will find the stronger, faster, fitter, more skilled cyclists. Generally a FRED free zone.

That sounds terrible sorry to hear this, you must want to stomp on their face with your cleats. Probably they are the same knuckle heads that think they are super quick on their new carbon road bikes and I manage to overtake them on my old mountain bike and they cant keep the pace up so they eventually turn off after a few ks

I had a great experience with it last year. Just started at the back of the pack and let things unfold in front of me and tapped out my own pace... It was my first and only 100 mile ride and I am looking forward to having a crack again this year...

Would love to do it again but no leave pass for sunday.
If i get a pass i will turn up on the day but that is unlikely.
The 50km ride is fairly flat, basically it is a big loop around Amberley Airport so you might see some big aircraft.

Yeah I know the area well Elantra, that's my old training grounds. A good thing to that there are no big hills on this course, because I don't have hill conditioning in my legs at the moment and thanks.

As usual, us Crouching Tigers will be there and most doing just the 100km ride. Going to be interesting as some of us are riding out to the event, doing the ride then riding home. All up 200km's. Gee, I haven't done a 200km ride since the nineties so this is going to be interesting and tiring.

Live at Eight Mile Plains so haven't quite worked out how to get to Ippy south side yet.

I will be there... Coming off two weeks of a cold recovery... Still hoping to complete the 100 miles; albeit slowly. Will be on a Merida steed with 2014 Lampre Merida kit on, if anyone wants to give me a wave...

A big thumbs up from me too. I did the 100 km and had a great time. A big thanks to all the officials enroute. Everyone was really friendly, and some great scenery along the way.
As Foo said, it was very well organised.
It was great to have the start/finish at the same point, as far as transport is concerned.
I look forward to the next one.

Was a great event for the 100km ride. Great to see so many out and enjoying the relatively cooler conditions. Three of us ended up doing our 200km's easy even with the threat of rain. Got home about 2 having done 203k in 7:56 with 2000 mtrs of climbing. Not too bad for an old codger
