Still cant get past Buff's answer phone to enquire after a QR.
I havnt managed to get to Bunnings either after ringing and no one able to tell me if they had the right thread pitch.
Did manage to remove the mudguard.
I put on one of my currently dormant Big Apples of 2.35 to get a look at it.
Heres a pic with the panniers and rack bag (red for some reason known only to Extrawheel)

That is a fine pitch - not the 'normal metric' pitch. Bunnings around here only carry the normal metric sizes ..
The 10mm washers will fit .. don't know if they do any spacers.

If I really want a particular thread/size I go to a specialist nut & bolt shop .. e.g. Coventry Fasteners. Only way of being certain you'll get want you want. Even then they have had to order stuff in for me (a fine thread 7mm counter sunk bolt).

According to Coventry Fasteners they do one 10x1mm bolt and its 35mm (which is too long).
I went to their Wangara store and bought their packet of 3 for $10 in case I cant find shorter elsewhere.
Total illigitimate of a day as it uses up the best part of a day getting their and back using public transport from where I am and involves two buses and a train each way. Both buses leave hourly.
I'd much prefer stainless steel.

Oh and I managed to get hold of Edward at Buff.
They are currently "on the road" and wont be back until the 11th of March if I understood them correctly.
I've taken the punt of ordering from Poland in the hope that a QR can arrive before then.
I'll update when it arrives as the tracking is in Polish and I've no idea what its saying or if I'm
indeed looking at the truck drivers eyesight test page.

That sounds like what that store has in stock. They should be able to order in what you want? Ring them up. A bolt I wanted took some 5 days to come in from their SA store. Just looked it up .. the 1mm pitch is 'extra fine'. Might be able to get it from a motorcycle shop/wrecker ..

As a complete front wheel yes, but not if the front wheel has disk brakes. Unless you modify the Extrawheel frame, a disk hub without the disk installed (of course) still wont fit. The disk side of the hub will rub on the frame.

Fingers crossed that the worst that ever happens is a puncture. Every puncture that I've had touring with the Extrawheel ... has been in the Extrawheel regardless of what tyre I'm using.

Warren.
Hi Warren,
could you please expand on what you were saying about disk braked hubs?
I'm hoping my experience might be different.
Does my poor pic confirm what you were saying or otherwise or might you need a different view?
My dynamo hub appears to fit ok but I might be missing what your saying?
I'm hoping it just that Extrawheel has modified the trailer frame since you got yours as I really want to use my Son28 disk hub.
Please enlighten me and put me out of my misery.
RonK told me something about the lack of ability to fit a handlebar bag utilising my J-bar handlebar whichwent over my head until he added a detail I'd missed in his first explanation.
I was able to fix that issue, with his assistance, and I'm hoping not to share your experience here.

You might find if you put the rotor on, it will foul the frame.

Warrens quote (see my above post) suggested:
"Unless you modify the Extrawheel frame, a disk hub without the disk installed (of course) still wont fit. The disk side of the hub will rub on the frame".

I believe you are correct about rotor rub and fouling the frame. :!:

I think though WarrenH was saying the very hub itself would rub.

Its had me pondering.......
I went back to the first page and looked closely at Andrews (Aushiker) pics of his Extra-wheel trailer bought back in 2012.

I now notice that his dropouts are of a different design to the ones on my trailer.

I'll try to remember to take some pics tomorrow to better show what I'm waffling about as my above pics dont make it that clear.
Andrews dropouts are below the main trailer frame whilst mine are at the ends of the trailer frame.

Probably not articulated the best - hey its late here and I've still promised my expanded gut a 2 hour punishment ride tonight so I'll worry about symantics tomorrow. :)

Rif' G'day. I'm sorry to be infrequent on the Forum lately. It also appears that I haven't replied to a couple of personal notes, from you, Karl aka Fat Guts and JonB ... despite having sent replies to both you and Karl back in December. They're not appearing in the sent items folder.

I just finished two more sections of the Great South Coast Track during last month. It wasn't practical to ride the 8 kilometre section from Coogee to Bondi without carrying the bike up several hundred steps, so I walked it. I've only one section to go now of the GSCT. The beach section from Wally Newton, over the moors at the Osprey sea cliffs then to Lake Barracuda. I've already done the Malacoota (more correctly from Genoa on fire trails) to Lake Barracuda a while back. I did the section from Black Fellows Point (the southern side of Lake Tuross ) over the sea cliffs at Potato Point, in Feb, that section was worth waiting for. After the school holidays, there was almost noone around, it was very peaceful.

Back to my Extrawheel. Even with the disk removed, Rif,' the Laser Lite hub was still rubbing on the Extrawheel frame. The dropouts on my frame are too far outboard. The dropouts need to be more inboard for the Laser Lite hub to fit. Edward from Buff (who is an Engineer) recommended not to remove the dropouts and reposition them, because of the thinness of the Extrawheel frame despite the extra thickness of the sleeve between the frame and dropouts.

Image

I just filed the offending areas, to stop the rubbing. I tried to file as little off as possible, in an attempt to preserve the screw mounts, but it wasn't to be.

Image

As if by magic, the wheel spins freely now. Shame about my spare wheel though ... but its no biggy loosing it to the greater touring cause.

Just looking at those photos a couple of things can be concluded:

1. Extrawheel have modified the fork on new trailers to deal with this problem of disc hubs rubbing, it seems;
2. The centrelock splined SON28 is a smaller body than the bolt-on version - will probably not rub even on the old design Extrawheel fork.

G'day Warren,
always pleased to not see you in here.
To my mind it means your off "doing" rather than in here talking about doing and it generally means we can soonish look forward to even more of your fantastic photographic contributions.
No didnt receive any PM's from you back in Dec, but it's all good.
Knowing your out and about regularly, I just put it down to your touring which to my mind is much more beneficial and important than answering PM's and emails.
Coogee and Bondi sound a little different than your usual haunt we read about of the Bicentennial National Trail which sounds like a fantastic resource in your back yard.
Much different wildlife, although on a summers day when the lovelies are out in their finery, the scenery is almost comparably appreciable.
Thanks for the contact details, I'm sure I'll take advantage at some stage.

I'm hoping to take off down the south coast for a few days to check out the Ogres foibles early next week. :)
I'll take the train to Bunbury and head southward from their.
No set agenda or time frame in mind and if there is no issues with the bike, or gear I'm taking, the further I'll go.

Cheers
Aidan

Rif', the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney was, where I spent my early school days and it's not to un-wild to cope with. The section of the GSCT from Coogee to Bondi was full of urban wildlife. I'd been warned not to ride it. Too many joggers and tourists. So many people. I saw several tourists crashing into other tourists and then crashing into joggers and vis-à-vis.

Some of the local wildness was nice though ... Shark Point, at Clovelly.

Image

Spaced out beach cadets at Bondi.

Image

The most enjoyable example of real wildness was some beach side cricket at Coogee Oval watching a herd of Pegasus (Randwick Petersham CC's) Mitchell Starc and Monty Panasar harassing a flock of Magpies (Western Districts CC) ... Monty the Python bowling.

Image

Have a good trip Rif'. I hope the weather is good, with fair tailwinds. Like you mentioned, not being in a hurry, we can enjoy all the wildlife.

Warren.

PS, I don't think that I posted this image, of a bit more GSCT wildness, when I did the Illawarra to Maroubra section ... a water spout, with much rain coming. At Mahon Pool.

Finally finished assembling my Christmas gift over the weekend and had my first ride with the Extrawheel.
25k to work and back without a problem, except the rattling panniers as I had forgotten to use the inserts on the bars. I didn't notice any speed or time problems, might have a sore neck from constantly checking that the panniers were still there and the Extrawheel was still attached.

You'll get over that, but yes, it alarmed me that it stays on by tension, not screws.

Well today I'm feeling sick to death of my extra wheel and I've yet to even ride with it attached. :|
What a PITA to attach :!:
Whilst I appreciate there has to be tension in the forks to hold onto the trailer nuts - FFS, mine are very tight and hard to manipulate onto the bike.

Turns out its not going to work with my Berthoud mudguard stays.
The trailers forks look like they'll be ok on the tarmac but only if the trailer doesn't have to rise by more than a few inches or the forks want to rise up to hit the mudguard stays.

I'll look for my camera shortly to show what my attempt to articulate via typing doesn't.

Those supposedly 29er extra long forks I paid extra for appear to be a bit of a joke in what appears to be minimal clearance.

Think I've already mentioned it but it looks like the trailers own mudguard "might" work with a 1.75 tire but no way with a 2.00 x 622

I had planned a shake down ride today but having spent some time and energy getting to finally fit the damn thing to the back of my bike I've decided that I've had enough of bikes today.

Typically of Perth, its started to tipp down.
If its going to be another wet winter, it'll be my last here.
You can adjust the tension of the arms. For my last trip from Alice Springs to Laverton riding the Mereenie Loop and Great Central Rd I used the Extra Wheel trailer wit mudguards and 2.00 tire without any problems.

First proper rain in 7 months and already complaining :( . You tell me where you get better winter cycling weather than here in Perth.

Wow, I came back and had edited my post considerably before your post appeared.

How does one adjust the tension in the arms?
It was hard work getting it attached and took a few attempts.

I'll have another look tomorrow but I came away from my last attempt to get the trailers mudguard to fit my 50 x 622 Mondial convinced it couldn't be done.
Perhaps I'm just too tired and cranky.
What size wheel are you rolling?

I find the Perth weather a PITA.
I've been here 18 months approx but find it either too damn hot or in my first winter here, just too damn wet.
I admit the first half of winter last year was pretty good but the last half was a lot of days wet.
I'm less than a fan of the rain and can't get past my dislike.
Its only got to look like it might and I'm sitting on my chuff putting on pounds.

Where has better winter weather? Northern NSW from what I've read.
I came to Perth due to what I heard about the sunshine hours but it turns out I can't take advantage of them.

I sure hope your correct as I'm a fan of mudguards.
I"m struggling to find my camera but I'll have a pic or two up later for sure.
For clarity, I couldn't get the trailers mudguard to work with the Mondial I'd bought for it.
I think I even tried a 2.00 Supreme with no dice.

As for the trailers forks, the problem appears to be they sit below, approx 1 inch, directly underneath my fenders stays.
When the trailer is lifted they contact.

I certainly found the second pertinent as that trailer went on with ease.
My forks appear to need lots of tension released.

Mine is in my storage unit at the moment so cannot double check but I the last time I used it I had a 26" tyre on it, so that would be around 2" I think. IIRC I used the OEM Hutchinson that came with my Giant XTC 2 new.

Clearance was okay ...
