Well, I went to the session last night, but it was poorly attended, and I felt embarrassed for the organisers. However the presentation was informative and interesting.
Just to clarify up front - it's not a race, an endurance event, or a challenge, it's cyclo-tourism, EnZed style - as much about tourism as it is about cycling, and it's going to become an annual event.
The ride has been created in response to feedback from entrants to the Lake Taupo Challenge who wanted to a longer and more relaxed event to see the attractions of the Taupo region. It's being marketed entirely in Australia at first and later will be offered internationally. It's not being marketed at all in EnZed.
The objective is to support tourism in the region and promote cycling. The event will be held in March in conjunction with the Taupo Bike Fest week, and borrows from the GVBR and Cycle Qld rides, with some important differences.
The ride will be over seven days, but the distances have been kept short to allow time for the tourism activities the region has to offer, with lots of Kiwi culture - a Maori welcome ceremony, a hungi for example, and to visit and enjoy the spectacular landscape. There will be an opprtunity to hike the Tongariro Crossing on the rest day. My memory for the exact numbers is hazy but I think the longest day is 100km and the shortest only 30km, with the total is just under 400km.
And only two nights will be camping - the others will all be in local accommodation.
There will be a base price of just under $1500 NZ (again, my memory is hazy on the exact price), then for a surcharge you'll be able to select your prefered level of accommodation, from backpacker to luxury or any mixture. First and last nights will be in the same accommodation, so you'll be able store baggage, bike cases and the like. And of course your luggage will be transported.
There will be only 600 places, and I think they are likely to sell fast.
Finally, the full Pedal the Plateau website will be operating in the next few days. You'll be able to get detailed information and make your booking.
Don't miss out...

Thanks for sharing this - good to hear.
Out of interest, what do you feel would have helped draw more visitors?

If I hadn't heard about it here, I wouldn't have known about it.AUbicycles wrote:Out of interest, what do you feel would have helped draw more visitors?
The organisers mentioned that they'd arranged with BQ to invite BQ members, but I'm a member and don't recall getting any information about it.
I'm not convinced that much value would be added by an information night anyway. I'm sure most people would find via the internet a more convenient way to access the information, but at the time the website was not fully functional.
The organisers really need to focus on their web marketing, but really who are we to tell Kiwis about marketing tourism.
It's unfortunate also that they missed an opportunity to promote the event in the most recent Australian edition of Cyclist magazine, which include an article about cycling Lake Taupo, with stunning photography that would have most cyclists itching to go there.
