Frome St bikeway

BikeSA are looking to make a point about the Frome St bikeway and will be hosting a Mass Ride on Frome Street, Wednesday Morning, May 14. Details are:

What: Frome Street Bikeway opening
Where: South Parklands -South Terrace (Opposite Charlotte Street). We will ride along the new Frome Street bikeway all the way to Pirie Street.
When: 8am
Why: Show your support for well designed cycle infrastructure and more bike lanes to come.

Here's some background: The Frome St bikeway is being completed by the Adelaide City Council. It removes one lane of the road. High-profile newspaper and talkback radio personalities have been outraged. An influential developer is opposed and said he is willing to fund an opponent to the Lord Mayor who will remove the bikeway. Coincidentally or otherwise, the Mayor's strongest opponent is now against the bikeway. In short, if we want decent cycling infrastructure in the Adelaide CBD during the next decade then it is crunch time.

It's not exactly a decent cycling infrastructure... Would've made more sense to make it a clearway during peak hour periods and make it a bike lane in those times. Likewise on Pulteney St, make it a bike lane only, not a bus lane also during those peak periods. Cost effective solutions that are quick,easy and dare I say it far smarter.

If we want to actually do something proactive in this state, then finding some quality people to advocate and work with others would be a good start.... Nothing is going to be achieved until groups are working together proactively. Rant over.

The clearway on Pulteney Street doesn't work. The intention is to allow free passage for buses and cyclists ..... however not a day goes by that it isn't blocked by at least one parked car leaving the bus to weave in and out of its dedicated lane, and also causing difficulties for cyclists.

For a clearway to be effective it also needs to be a tow away zone.

Definitely agree about clear ways needing to be tow away zones. Regardless of the road and whether or not it has a bike lane, they needs to be!

Sadly our infrastructure and planning is still stuck pre 1985 and the funds available are also less than pre 1985!

Fortunately it is easy to solve ..... $300 fine for parking in a clearway. Tow truck company gets $200 and Council get $100. Tow trucks would be ready in the side streets and the second it becomes a clearway they will simply pull out onto the street and get to work making it a clearway. Fines are paid on collection of the car by the owner ...... hopefully somewhere a long way away in the suburbs!

I'd have preferred they moved the parking to the centre of the road like they do in inner-city Melbourne. You get one lane each way, plus bike lanes and parking that is away from the bike lanes. As a bonus, the area put aside for parking becomes right-turn lanes at the intersections.

I am inclined to support the Frome St bikeway regardless of any potential shortcomings.

My reading of the situation is that is this get knocked over then we won't see any new cycling infrastructure of any type (not even a clearway) in the Adelaide Council area for a decade or more, and our success or failure will have flow-on effects to other councils and state government.
