Another path closure

But I'm not exactly sure what path is being closed! New signs appeared yesterday - 1 just before you pass under the Windan Bridge (heading from Burswood) and 1 on the fence blocking the old path from the bridge to Belmont and points beyond. I can't upload any pics of the signs yet but they read:

"PSP to be closed 26th May 2014 to 1st Jan 2015
This is to allow for the upgrade of Victoria Park Drive to be completed
Follow detour via Great Eastern Highway"

Note these only appeared yesterday so not a lot of warning. I've searched the web, checked the Mainroads sites etc but can't find anything other than vague hints of disruptions due to works relating to the new stadium. As far as I can tell there aren't actually any PSPs in this area but I notice a lot of organizations (e.g. Burswood Park Board) refer to all shared paths as PSPs even though they aren't. So at this stage all I know is that some cyclists are expected to endure 7 months (at least) of a "fun" detour via Great Eastern Highway.

Anyone have more information than this?

My normal commute is along the Graham Farmer Freeway PSP but I have been off the bike since Monday as the brakes needed a service so I haven't seen the signs.

The Victoria Park Drive upgrade is a Main Roads project and the project page is here:

Like cavebear said, I would hope the closure is only for the shared path alongside Victoria Park drive as I am not aware of any further scope for Stadium works on the Northern side of GFF once they finally complete the Western Power cable relocation works that were meant to be finished in January.

Your best bet for a confirmation would be to contact Main Roads.

Walked down to the SE end of Windan Bridge during lunch to see the signs (I needed the excercise anyway). Gave the Perth Stadium Info Line a call about it and they had no idea about it. Called Main Roads and they couldn't find anything about it but they will apparently get back to me on if the GFF PSP is going to be affected by the closure.

It just seems really odd and confusing to put up signage about a closure on Victoria Park drive around 1km away at Windan bridge.

Thanks for the extra info. The signage at Windan had me scratching my head too so I'm glad it's not a big problem (like shutting either the path on the south side of the river or the path alongside the Graham Farmer Freeway). Not sure what the "recommended detour" will be but if it was me I'd use Goodwood Parade and Riversdale Rd - I used to go that way a lot and never had any problems with traffic (punctures from broken glass on the other hand... )

Wasn't too sure if I should create an other topic, or just post on this one, went for the easy option.

Friday evening, corner of George/Murray St, Perth:

We were able to squeeze through these barriers, but no signs up indicating if the path was actually closed.

Again, no mention on MainRoads "Perth CBD Roadworks Map".

Funny story about the above map, I e-mailed off PTA/MRA/CoP/MainRoads around 18 months ago, indicating that there should be one central area that all government organisations notified and alerts all modes of transport about the outage. This was around the time the railway line was being diverted, resulting in outages on the PSP, but also effected rail and road users. Born was the above map, and later the Keep Perth Moving app. Shame these things don't work if the data is feed into them, and this plus the Trinity College RSP closure are examples were State and/or Local are closing cycling paths.

Hi Roland,

This is something that really annoys me.

Unfortunately the traffic management companies only seem to consider motor vehicle traffic. As a result they are continually offloading barriers, placing signs and parking their vehicles on footpaths and shared paths. They do this with no consideration for the bike and pedestrian TRAFFIC, which is then often forced into the road, in the vey locations where they are already controlling that traffic into reduced and narrower lanes.

About time the TM companies placed pedestrian/cycle traffic first.

It's the specialist TM Contractors, that have the accreditation that don't.

It looks like they finally got around to updating the Perth Stadium and Main Roads websites to mention the closure that initiated this thread:

I don't think much of the proposed detour route, as BandedRail mentioned, Goodwood Parade and Riversdale Road is much more direct and is relatively cyclist friendly. OTOH you could always just ride on Victoria Park Drive where the section of shared path is closed if you are comfortable riding on the road.

It interesting that the website says the closure will be 6 months longer than the signage says.

Riding home on Monday night along the Mitchell PSP in Ozzie Park the path was blocked by Orange cones / tape where some kerb had been concreted at one of the road junctions. There was no signage and it was hidden behind cars coming out of the side road. Riding in this morning a large environmental truck stopped at the corner of Milligan St and the Terrace - they were putting cones out in front of it but nothing behind. These things are just par for the course when cycling in Perth. I cannot recall a single day since I started riding into the CBD last November that there was no obstructions of one form or another.
