Racing hungover

Postby Farmer Elvis » Fri May 30, 2014 9:22 pm

I need help, best mates son 21st Saturday night, 100km road race Sunday morning, don't expect to stay completely off grog, will try and minimise it maybe 6 beers. Maybe a few more, it's gonna hurt, any ideas other than staying off the mechanical bull they will have there!

Have a couple of panadol and a powerade before going to bed, have a big bottle of water next to bed and drink lots all through the night if you wake up. Better to be up a couple of times to pee than to wake up dehydrated.

Then again, half a dozen could be hardly anything if you're spacing them out over the night. You'd probably be fine just by slamming a couple of glasses of water before bed and maybe having a sports drink with breakfast.

Maybe maccas the next morning, i did an unplanned pub crawl with my best mate a few months back the night before doing O'Reilly's and Binna Burra (2 of the longest climbs in Qld) and actually rode really well. Or like the time i knocked off work delivering pizzas at 9pm and drove through the night to get to the goldy at 3am for the Tour de Tamborine. Couple of hours kip in the car, got dropped by the bunch a few k before the climb and then perked up to catch and drop the lot of em by the top :) .

Mind you the morning after my bucks night didn't go so well, only did 20k and felt like i was going to die  .

Depends on how hung over you are.

When I'm hung over I would not race because a) I'll ride like crap and not be competitive and b) I'd be a danger to myself and other riders. If you aren't fit to race don't race would be my advice.

I consume Shotz tabs during the day prior, then when I get home into the morning before the ride or race.

I'll be riding and drinking, the extra marital affair hmmm that might put a spring in my step but probably a knife in my back! So I suppose it's water and electrolytes before bed, will report back.

Just don't race. Problem solved. You're not a pro, are you?

It's a 100km road race, that means ~3km of actual racing. You'll be fine.

The common theme here is Vitamin B. Consuming alcohol apparently massively depletes your stores of it.

I don't drink alcohol any more, but on the rare occasion I did taking a tablet or two really helped with the tiredness the following day. Red wine was a killer though! Hard to completley mitigate the effects of that stuff.

Depending on how much you drink and how late you get home, I would seriously consider not riding. For me, after 6 beers, no way.

Best I've found is vegimite cheese and tomato toast, big staminade before bed and take one with me to top up when I wake to pee. Works like a charm.

Well it's over. Had not a huge night but big enough 9 beers, I know cause I put the stubby lids in my pocket and one rum, snuck out before they could pour me another! Home by 130 had a hydralite and a couple of glasses of water, up at 6, pouring rain, an up n go, 3 bananas and a hydralite prior to ride, rode reasonably well, came in in the front group, I'll sleep well tonight.

I just found this reference to Hypoxia & hangovers -

When you breathe, your lungs take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. This process is remarkably efficient. At sea level, healthy non-smokers can have up to 99 per cent oxygen saturation in their blood haemoglobin. (Heavy smokers at sea level can be at the equivalent of 5000 feet, and being intoxicated or hungover is reckoned to be a penalty of 2000 feet.)

I stupidly still smoke (progressively cutting down - Nov 20 quit day). So I am already at an equivalent of 2km?

Damn it. Hate to think what happens if i was to actually climb something of appreciable height then.
