Online Survey of Perth Riders

Postby Aushiker » Tue Jun 10, 2014 9:42 pm

Details of the survey can be found at the Bicycle Transport Alliance website.

As a cyclist based in the Perth Metropolitan Region (PMR), you are invited to participate in an online survey conducted by Dr David Blake and Mr Tim Perkins, based at Edith Cowan University.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential to use socially networked (e.g. Facebook) mobile phone fitness application data (e.g. STRAVA) to model human movement patterns and, in particular, bicycle usage in an urban environment.

Another online survey of commuters working in Perth city, Northbridge, East Perth or West Perth. The survey is on behalf of the Department of Transport (WA) by way of the University of Leeds (UK).

Chance to win 2 free Gold Class/La Premiere movie tickets for anyone who completes the survey.

Thanks for the heads-up but what makes you think it is on behalf of the Department of Transport? There is nothing suggesting this on the page.

That would explain why there were so many questions relating to 140 William St, which is their office.

Wonder why it had to be arranged by a university in the UK, isn't there a PHD student in WA that would have a similar field?

Caroline is a Master's student and probably has some linkage to the Department or is an online student doing her Masters at Leeds, e.g., family or past or current employment or some other connection.

I do wonder about the formality of the linkage but as there is no proper statements of their involvement, no ethic statements, no use of their logo, no formal statements of how the data will be used or its purpose, no identifying of the referred to "partners". Put it this way at work our students wouldn't be allowed to or rather shouldn't be allowed to do this way. Even our undergraduate classes have to have ethics clearance for research projects.

Anyway it will be interesting to if Caroline publishes anything from it.

I've done a degree at a UK university from Perth: These days you can work with the people you want to work with without having to move countries.

Flip side is that sometimes you want to get data from a number of locations - I have a colleague who has obtained data from here, NZ, BrizVegas, India and Spain for her work. Again, so much easier than it used to be.
