MTB rotors 160mm on the back WT?!
Postby dudleygb » Tue Jul 15, 2014 12:51 am
Ultimate NOOB mistake!!!!!!!!!!!! ARGHHHHHHHH
So, I just wanna ask,,,,,is it ok to have 2 180mm rotors? If so then I can just get an adaptor. If not I need to buy a 160mm rotor!!! ((
I'm SO stupid!!! Anyways, this was my first try.

thx mitzmitzikatzi wrote:Yes you can use an adapter and a 180mm rotor on the rear. It is just "overkill" in most cases.
some say the rear will lock up with a 180 on the back?

bychosis wrote:Will lock up with 160mm too, just depends how hard you pull the lever! My first disc brakes were 2nd hand and 203f, 185r on an XC bike. Worked fine, but just overkill so I eventually scaled down one size for each, still work fine.
awesome thx bychosis, can u confirm that adapter is correct one?

As an aside, when I upgraded the brakes on my Anthem to XT, I went for 160mm front and rear on the LBS's recommendation.

If you squeeze the lever too hard, you'll lock it up.dudleygb wrote:thx mitzmitzikatzi wrote:Yes you can use an adapter and a 180mm rotor on the rear. It is just "overkill" in most cases.

If you don't squeeze the lever too hard, you won't.
People run 203mm rotors at both ends of bikes. 180mm is not going to cause an international crisis.
A new bracket will space your caliper out as required.

You could probably have achieved similar results without the weight by changing to some better brake pads, I'm sure it looks pretty cool thoughSmellyTofu wrote:I couldn't lock up on the 160mm disc with the Shimano M445 hydraulic brakes. Ended up getting cheap Shimano SLX 203mm rotors for <$30 each and some adaptors. Instant satisfaction that I repeated the same exercise on the commuter with Tektro Nouvela. Doing this F&R upgrade to 203mm worked out to be way cheaper than buying fancy 1 x XT brakes.

Caliper brakes and V-brakes can easily lock up a wheel. If you can't lock a wheel up with a 160mm disc then something is clearly wrong.SmellyTofu wrote:I couldn't lock up on the 160mm disc with the Shimano M445 hydraulic brakes.
