Yes I looked at the radar at 4.45am and it was no cycling this morning. It's forecast to clear up after midday, however.g-boaf wrote:Yuck! That's the only description for the weather this morning.

Forecast yes.. Reality no... Grrr. I found that out the hard way. Looked nice and clear, blue skies and even pleasantly warm. By the time I got to Bonnyrigg - it looked really, really dodgy. Heavy looking dark clouds, few drops of rain. So turn around and rush back, see if I can beat the rain. No chance. By the time I got to Horsley Drive it was absolutely bucketing down, really really heavy. God that was bad.biker jk wrote:Yes I looked at the radar at 4.45am and it was no cycling this morning. Now I'm home and cleaned up - it is bright sunshine again.

No M7 either tomorrow - that marathon is on instead. Not sure where I'll ride tomorrow. I want to at least get 4 hours riding tomorrow. Still, today's 30.6km/h average with traffic lights and slow downs here and there isn't bad.Greg@home wrote:That sucks.. boaf

Ha! I did nearly the same thing. Went out after lunch when the sky was clear blue nearly all around. Riding around Olympic Park and that big black cloud came in with some horrible cold winds but fortunately only some light rain that soon blew away. Of course it all blew to Bonnyrig. Once i was home sitting out the front with a cuppa at 3-45 there wasn't a single cloud from horizon to horizon that i could see.g-boaf wrote:Forecast yes.. Reality no... Grrr. Just wait until 2pm and go for a quick ride on the M7. I'll be happy with a quick 50 or go on the M7 itself. (with plenty of tubes)g-boaf wrote:No M7 either tomorrow - that marathon is on instead. This carbon rider heard the rain and stayed tucked up in bed!!
I'm blaming you, you should have PM'd me and given me an incentive to bring out the steel bike and ride in the rain. Ah well, maybe next week....
BTW, well done

Says the man with a roof over his head. I'm well known for riding in the rain. Carbon bikes be damned - they are made for riding and I'm going to use them, even if it is raining.recumbenteer wrote:Ya bunch o' sooks lol
Anyhow - the weather today was superb. It's so nice to ride without being frozen! All thoughts of winter disappeared when I was sitting down at the Armory having coffee in the sun.

I was down in Mittagong at 8 this morning, not on a bike but in a warm car. It was 2 degrees there with a savage wind but i saw 2 cyclists out. They had my greatest respect.

The section that has been resurfaced is from the bottom of the gorge heading to Galston and then not the whole stretch. It is an improvement since you can consistently keep left to allow cars to pass without worrying about potholes, ridges, etc.queequeg wrote:What's the new road surface like through the Gorge?biker jk wrote:2 deg at the bottom of Galston Gorge this morning,

1 degree C at McCarrs Creek at sunrise this morning, and that's near the coast. Saw one guy heading in from Terrey Hills in full summer kit. Dude, I hope you're OK.
Colder inland I hear...

Didn't feel that bad, but I was the best equipped I've ever been. Still couldn't feel my toes though Kudos for all brave souls who took on the cold today!rogan wrote:Coldest Sydney morning in 4 years.

I stupidly went for a "lovely" early Sunday ride to the NW area (Maralya/Bligh Park/etc) and my fingertips froze (despite two layers of gloves). They thawed out at Maccas for brekkie and it was OK after that. Never had a colder ride, nor have my hands been so cold and painful.

Castelli's 2014 version looks like the collar is better designed to keep your neck warm. It's decent enough for most days, but really cold conditions of zero - you need more than that (especially to keep your ears and face warm). In the cold conditions I wear that along with a winter-fleece lined long sleeve jersey and winter long pants as well - and I still freeze. Some days I will just not warm up at all.
Your mileage may vary though.
I didn't mind the weather last night, it wasn't as cold as it has been.
